...SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK CONTINUES...
...TODAY WE DISCUSS NOAA WEATHER RADIO AND OTHER CREDIBLE
ALERTING METHODS...

THE PURPOSE OF THIS DAY /AS PART OF SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK/
IS TO ADDRESS SEVERAL IMPORTANT OPTIONS PEOPLE HAVE TO RECEIVE
CRITICAL LIFE-SAVING SEVERE WEATHER INFORMATION. SPECIFICALLY...
WE WILL BRIEFLY DISCUSS:

1. NOAA WEATHER RADIO (AND ITS `SAME` CAPABILITIES)
2. WIRELESS EMERGENCY ALERTS (WEA)

...NOAA WEATHER RADIO /NWR/...

NOAA WEATHER RADIO IS THE VOICE OF THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE...AND THIS BROADCAST SERVICE PROVIDES YOU WITH UPDATED
WEATHER INFORMATION CONTINUOUSLY...24 HOURS A DAY...EVERY DAY OF
THE YEAR.

TO RECEIVE THE BROADCASTS ORIGINATING FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE...A SPECIAL RADIO CAPABLE OF RECEIVING SIGNALS IN THE VERY
HIGH FREQUENCY (VHF) PUBLIC SERVICE BAND IS REQUIRED. IN SOUTHERN
MIDDLE TENNESSEE AND NORTH ALABAMA...FREQUENCIES FROM 162.400 TO
162.550 MEGAHERTZ ARE USED FOR NOAA WEATHER RADIO BROADCASTS.
METEOROLOGISTS...FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HUNTSVILLE
ALABAMA...PREPARE WEATHER INFORMATION THAT IS BROADCAST IN THREE TO
FIVE MINUTE BROADCAST CYCLES. THIS INCLUDES WATCHES AND WARNINGS...
LOCAL FORECASTS FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS...CURRENT WEATHER
CONDITIONS...CLIMATE DATA AND OTHER SPECIFIC WEATHER INFORMATION.

NOAA WEATHER RADIO IS USEFUL ANYTIME...BUT BECOMES EVEN MORE
IMPORTANT DURING SEVERE WEATHER. WHEN SIGNIFICANT/SEVERE WEATHER
THREATENS...NORMAL BROADCAST CYCLES ARE INTERRUPTED...AND THE FOCUS
IS SHIFTED TO IMPENDING SEVERE WEATHER THREAT. WATCHES...WARNINGS
AND FOLLOW-UP SEVERE WEATHER STATEMENTS ARE GIVEN THE HIGHEST
PRIORITY AND ARE FREQUENTLY UPDATED.

NOAA WEATHER RADIO IS ALSO PART OF THE EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM (EAS)
THAT SPEEDS DISSEMINATION OF CRITICAL WARNING INFORMATION THROUGH
COMMERCIAL BROADCAST OUTLETS. IN AN EMERGENCY...EACH NOAA WEATHER
RADIO STATION WILL TRANSMIT A WARNING ALARM TONE SIGNAL FOLLOWED BY
INFORMATION ON THE EMERGENCY SITUATION. THIS SIGNAL IS CAPABLE OF
ACTIVATING SPECIALLY DESIGNED RECEIVERS BY INCREASING THE VOLUME OR
PRODUCING A VISUAL OR AUDIO ALARM. NOT ALL WEATHER BAND RECEIVERS
HAVE THIS CAPABILITY...BUT ALL RADIOS THAT RECEIVE NOAA WEATHER
RADIO CAN RECEIVE THE EMERGENCY BROADCASTS. THE WARNING ALARM DEVICE
IS TESTED EACH WEDNESDAY...USUALLY BETWEEN 11 AM AND NOON...WEATHER
PERMITTING.

...SPECIFIC MESSAGE AREA ENCODING /SAME/...

A VERY IMPORTANT FEATURE THAT MOST WEATHER RADIO RECEIVERS NOW HAVE
IS CALLED SPECIFIC AREA MESSAGE ENCODING /SAME/. THIS `SAME`
TECHNOLOGY ALLOWS YOU TO PROGRAM YOUR RECEIVER TO RECEIVE SELECTED
WATCHES AND WARNINGS FOR SPECIFIC COUNTIES THAT MOST IMPACT YOU AND
YOUR FAMILY. IT IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO OWN A WEATHER RADIO WITH
`SAME` TECHNOLOGY AND ENSURE IT IS PROGRAMMED PROPERLY.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT NOAA WEATHER RADIO AND THE TRANSMITTERS
THAT COVER PORTIONS OF NORTH ALABAMA AND SOUTHERN MIDDLE
TENNESSEE...INCLUDING `SAME` CODES...VISIT OUR NOAA WEATHER RADIO

...WIRELESS EMERGENCY ALERTS (WEA)...

AS PART OF A NATIONAL ALERTING SYSTEM CALLED `IPAWS`...WIRELESS
EMERGENCY ALERTS ARE A FREE PUBLIC MOBILE ALERTING SERVICE THAT
UTILIZES CELL BROADCAST TECHNOLOGY TO NOTIFY YOU OF ANY IMPENDING
WEATHER WARNINGS. THE SYSTEM SENDS A 90-CHARACTER SMS MESSAGE TO YOU
MOBILE DEVICE/CELL PHONE THAT WILL ENCOURAGE YOU TO SEEK DETAILS
FROM ADDITIONAL SOURCES. DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU ARE...THE MOST
COMMON SHORT-DURATION WARNINGS YOU WILL RECEIVE ALERTS FOR ARE...
TORNADO WARNINGS AND FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS. MANY CELL PHONES AND CELL
PHONE CARRIERS SUPPORT WEA-CAPABILITIES HOWEVER IF YOU ARE NOT
SURE...YOU CAN CONTACT YOUR CARRIER FOR MORE INFORMATION.
