PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CARIBOU ME
940 AM EST THU JAN 22 2015

EFFECTIVE ON JANUARY 28, 2015, THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL
IMPLEMENT THE USE OF MIXED CASE TEXT IN SELECT HYDROLOGY TEXT
PRODUCTS AT ALL NWS WEATHER FORECAST OFFICES (WFOS).

THE PRIMARY CHANGE WITH MIXED CASE WILL INVOLVE USING MIXED CASE
LETTERS AND WORDS IN THE BODY OF THE PRODUCT, AS WELL AS THE USE OF
COMMAS AND OTHER PREVIOUSLY UNUSED PUNCTUATION. THE FOLLOWING
HYDROLOGY PRODUCTS FROM NWS CARIBOU WILL BE ISSUED IN MIXED CASE
TEXT:

FLW - RIVER FLOOD WARNING
FLS - FOLLOW UP RIVER FLOOD STATEMENTS
HYD - DAILY HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL SUMMARY
RVD - DAILY RIVER AND LAKE SUMMARY

THIS IS A CONTINUATION OF THE RISK-REDUCTION EFFORT THAT BEGAN IN
AUGUST 2010. AT THAT TIME, THE NWS BEGAN ISSUING NATIONAL PUBLIC
INFORMATION STATEMENT (PNS) PRODUCTS USING MIXED CASE TEXT AND THE
EXPANDED PUNCTUATION/CHARACTER SET.

IN OCTOBER 2011, SELECT NWS OFFICES BEGAN ISSUING THE AREA FORECAST
DISCUSSION (AFD), REGIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY (RWS) AND PNS PRODUCTS IN
THE MIXED CASE TEXT FORMAT.

NWS PARTNERS AND USERS OF THESE WFO TEXT PRODUCTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO
CONSIDER NWS INTENT AND COMMENT REGARDING THIS NEXT STEP IN THE RISK
REDUCTION EFFORT. USER FEEDBACK WILL HELP THE NWS TO BETTER PLAN THE
EVENTUAL TRANSITION OF ALL NWS TEXT PRODUCTS TO MIXED CASE AND THE
EXPANDED CHARACTER SET. YOU CAN PROVIDE FEEDBACK AT THE FOLLOWING
