...PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT...

THE NWS CLEVELAND WSR-88D DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR, KCLE, WAS
RECENTLY UPGRADED TO BUILD 16. WITH THIS UPGRADE, THE KCLE RADAR
BEGAN PARTICIPATION IN A FIELD TEST OF THE MULTIPLE ELEVATION SCAN
OPTION FOR SAILS CALLED MESO-SAILS. THE FIELD TEST WILL CONTINUE
FOR ABOUT 1 YEAR.

THE SUPPLEMENTAL ADAPTIVE INTRA-VOLUME LOW LEVEL SCAN (SAILS)
FUNCTION WAS DEPLOYED IN BUILD 14.0 AND ALLOWED FOR ONE ADDITIONAL
LOW LEVEL SCAN (0.5 ELEVATION ANGLE) PER VOLUME SCAN. MESO-SAILS
ENABLES THE OPERATOR TO SELECT EITHER 1, 2 OR 3 SUPPLEMENTAL LOW
LEVEL SPLIT CUT SCANS PER VOLUME SCAN. WHEN THE MESO-SAILS 3 SCAN
OPTION IS ACTIVE, 0.5 DEGREE UPDATES WILL BE AVAILABLE EVERY 75 TO
90 SECONDS DEPENDING ON ANOTHER FEATURE CALLED AVSET (AVSET
GOVERNS HOW HIGH AN ELEVATION ANGLE THE RADAR GOES UP TO BEFORE
STARTING ANOTHER VOLUME SCAN). EACH MESO-SAILS CUT WILL ADD 31
SECONDS TO THE VOLUME SCAN FOR A POTENTIAL ADDITION OF 93 SECONDS
USING MESO-SAILS 3. SAILS AS WELL AS MESO-SAILS IS ONLY AVAILABLE
WHEN THE RADAR IS IN VCP 12 OR 212.
