5 DAY ICE DISCUSSION...

A STRONG STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE NORTHEAST ACROSS THE CENTRAL GREAT
LAKES WEDNESDAY. THIS STORM SYSTEM WILL AID IN DETERIORATING SOME OF
THE ICE FIELDS...ESPECIALLY ANY REMAINING ICE IN THE WESTERN BASIN
OF LAKE ERIE AND POSSIBLY ALONG THE SHORES OF LAKE SUPERIOR. THE
STRONG WINDS EXPECTED WITH THE STORM WILL CAUSE THE WAVE ACTION TO
INCREASE TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY. HOWEVER...AS THE STORM SYSTEM
MOVES NORTHEAST OF THE AREA...MUCH COLDER AIR WILL RETURN TO THE
GREAT LAKES REGION. WINDS WILL DIMINISH CONSIDERABLY BY THURSDAY AND
THIS WILL ALLOW FOR SOME RAPID ICE DEVELOPMENT ALONG THE IMMEDIATE
SHORE LINE...THE PROTECTED BAYS AND HARBORS OF LAKES
SUPERIOR...HURON...AND MICHIGAN. MODERATE TO RAPID ICE DEVELOPMENT
WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE WESTERN BASIN OF LAKE ERIE IF THE WINDS ARE
VERY LIGHT OR CALM. ANY ICE THAT DOES FORM IS NOT EXPECTED TO
THICKEN RAPIDLY ENOUGH TO CAUSE SIGNIFICANT PROBLEMS FOR VESSELS.
THE COLD AIR MASS EXPECTED THIS WEEK IS EXPECTED TO BE SHORT LIVED
AND WARM AIR WILL BEGIN TO PUSH BACK INTO THE GREAT LAKES BY THE
WEEKEND.
