Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD
440 AM CDT Mon Apr 15 2024

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 433 AM CDT Mon Apr 15 2024

Very High fire danger is expected across the region today. Winds
will be out of the southeast sustained at 20-25 mph with gusts 35-40
mph. A few 45 mph gusts are not out of the question. Highs today
will be in the upper 70s to low 80s, with relative humidity dipping
into the upper teens to low 20 percent. Considering the cured fuels
and lack of green up at this point in time, have decided to upgrade
the Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning for portions of
southeastern South Dakota, northeastern Nebraska, northwestern Iowa,
and southwestern Minnesota. Please, use caution with any activity
that may cause sparks, as fires will spread quickly. Report any
fires that do start immediately.

Monday evening showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop
and continue through Wednesday morning. Drier and cooler, but
breezy weather for the rest of the week.

Consider postponing burning due to the very high or extreme fire
danger.

...VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the very high
category this afternoon. Very poor weather conditions and
very low moisture content of grasses, and other dry
organic material on the ground, indicate that dangerous
burning conditions exist. Fires will spread rapidly and
show erratic behavior. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

OUTLOOK FOR TUESDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the low category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.
