Weather Summary for Portions of the Central Plains
National Weather Service Hastings NE
833 PM CDT Sun Apr 21 2024

As we head into the new work and school week across our central and
south central Nebraska and north central Kansas coverage
area...let’s focus on mainly the very short term forecast...and also
the longer term forecast...mainly from Thursday night onward into
the weekend. Starting with the shorter term focus...first of
all...tonight will be the first time in several nights that there
are no concerns for frost or sub-freezing temperature...meaning that
your plants and outdoor sprinkler systems will be safe as low
temperatures drop no lower than the upper 30s to lower 40s. These
milder overnight readings will pave the way for a big warm-up on
Monday...as high temperatures will jump into the 70s across most of
our coverage area...but also with some lower 80s likely especially
near and south of the Kansas border. Unfortunately...but not
surprisingly...these warmer temperatures will come at the price of
fairly windy conditions...particularly from around the Tri Cities
and farther east and south from there...where southwesterly gusts as
high as 30 to 40 MPH will dominate most of the day. While most of
Monday will be dry...the evening and overnight hours will bring a
chance for isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some
places will see this activity...and some will not...but fortunately
the risk for severe storms should be fairly low...although small
hail and gusty winds cannot be ruled out with a few storms. Fast
forwarding several days ahead...our overall-biggest weather concern
of the week looks to arrive Thursday evening into Friday...as
current forecasts call for much higher chances of rain and
thunderstorms...some of which will probably be severe as another
powerful low pressure system arrives into the Plains. Following a
brief break in the action centered on Friday night and Saturday
daytime...yet another system could bring additional rain and
thunderstorm chances by Saturday night into Sunday...although as
always...these later chances are not yet a sure thing considering
they are nearly a week away.
