Fire Weather Planning Forecast for West Texas/Southeast New Mexico
National Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX
955 PM CDT Tue May 7 2024

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM CDT /NOON MDT/ UNTIL 9 PM
CDT /8 PM MDT/ WEDNESDAY FOR RELATIVE HUMIDITY OF 15% OR LESS,
20-FT WINDS OF 20 MPH OR MORE, AND VERY HIGH TO EXTREME FIRE DANGER
FOR SOUTHEASTERN NEW MEXICO AND WEST TEXAS SOUTH TO THE MARFA
PLATEAU AND PRESIDIO VALLEY...

.DISCUSSION...

Critical fire weather conditions are anticipated Wednesday across
all of southeastern New Mexico south to the Marfa Plateau and the
Presidio River Valley of west Texas. Single-digit relative humidity
readings, gusty 20-foot winds of 20 mph or more -- higher over the
mountains -- and very high to extreme fire danger will be present
during the afternoon and early evening. Rapid fire growth and
spread will be possible with any ignitions Wednesday.

Overnight relative humidity recovery tonight will be excellent over
the western Low Rolling Plains, southeastern Permian Basin, and the
lower Trans Pecos, but only poor to moderate elsewhere. Relative
humidity recovery Wednesday night will be generally poor to moderate.
Relative humidities will bottom out at 4-14% Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday, elevated to critical fire weather conditions are forecast
for south of the Pecos River. Improving conditions are expected this
weekend with cooler temperatures and increased moisture.
