THE DROUGHT THAT BEGAN DEVELOPING EARLIER IN THE SUMMER PERSISTED
INTO JULY AS PORTLAND SAW YET ANOTHER MONTH WITH BELOW NORMAL
RAINFALL. THE MONTH BEGAN WITH WARM TEMPERATURES INCLUDING 86
DEGREES ON INDEPENDENCE DAY. BY THE SECOND WEEK OF THE MONTH A SHIFT
IN THE WEATHER PATTERN BROUGHT COOL, DAMP, ONSHORE WINDS AND
TEMPERATURES WELL BELOW NORMAL FOR MID JULY. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE ON
JULY 9 WAS ONLY 59 DEGREES, THE COLDEST JULY DAY SINCE 2009. AFTER
ENDURING 4 STRAIGHT DAYS WHERE THE TEMPERATURE DID NOT HIT 70
DEGREES, A WARM UP BEGAN. WARM TEMPERATURES WERE COMMON WITH
OCCASIONAL THUNDERSTORMS FOR THE LAST HALF OF THE MONTH. THE
TEMPERATURE REACHED 90 DEGREES FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR ON JULY
15, BUT THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURE WAS ON JULY 22 WHEN THE TEMPERATURE
REACHED 95 DEGREES. THIS WAS THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURE RECORDED IN
PORTLAND SINCE JULY 22, 2011 (THE TEMPERATURE HIT 100 THAT DAY). THE
MONTH ENDED WITH LESS THAN HALF THE NORMAL RAINFALL, PERPETUATING
THE DROUGHT CONDITIONS.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 71.2 DEGREES WHICH WAS 2.1 DEGREES ABOVE
NORMAL AND THE 9TH WARMEST JULY ON RECORD. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE OF
59 DEGREES ON JULY 9 WAS THE COLDEST JULY HIGH TEMPERATURE SINCE
2009 AND TIED FOR THE 4TH COLDEST JULY HIGH ON RECORD. THE HIGH OF
95 DEGREES ON THE 22ND WAS THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURE RECORDED IN
EXACTLY 5 YEARS. THE WARMEST JULY ON RECORD WAS 2011 WHEN THE
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 72.7 DEGREES. THE COOLEST WAS ONLY 64.0
DEGREES IN 1962.

RAINFALL FELL DURING A THUNDERSTORM ON THE 14TH WHEN 0.43 INCHES WAS
MEASURED. THE DRIEST JULY ON RECORD WAS 1965 WHEN ONLY 0.61 INCHES
WAS RECORDED. THE WETTEST WAS 1915 WITH 10.84 INCHES.
