FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR NW OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
921 AM PDT THU JUL 30 2015

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS EXPECTED ACROSS SOUTHWEST
WASHINGTON AND NORTHWEST OREGON FROM THE COAST RANGE TO THE
CASCADES THROUGH FRIDAY...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...THE DISTRICT WILL REMAIN LOCKED IN A VERY
HOT...DRY AND UNSTABLE PATTERN FOR THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS. A STRONG
UPPER LEVEL RIDGE EXTENDS FROM THE GREAT BASIN TO THE PACIFIC
NORTHWEST. MEANWHILE A THERMAL TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE WILL REMAIN
NEAR THE COAST...ENHANCING INSTABILITY AND MIXING AND RESULTING IN
CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS. OVERNIGHT HUMIDITY RECOVERIES
WILL REMAIN POOR ALONG AND ABOVE THERMAL BELTS. EXCESSIVE HEAT
WARNINGS ARE IN PLACE FOR THE LOWLANDS WITH TEMPERATURES EXPECTED
TO EXCEED 100 DEGREES...SO FIREFIGHTERS ARE URGED TO STAY
HYDRATED TO PREVENT HEAT RELATED ILLNESS.

.DISCUSSION...A VERY STRONG RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE CONTINUES TO
DOMINATE THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST TODAY...BRINGING EXTREMELY HOT AND
DRY CONDITIONS TO THE REGION. MEANWHILE A THERMAL TROUGH REMAINS
WEST OF THE CASCADE CREST...ENHANCING MID-LEVEL INSTABILITY FOR
THE WESTSIDE. THE RESULTING MID-LEVEL HAINES 6 CONDITIONS ARE
EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN PLACE THROUGH AT LEAST FRIDAY EVENING.
EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNINGS ARE IN PLACE FOR THE LOWLANDS...WHERE
AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO REACH THE 100 TO 105 DEGREE
RANGE TODAY...WITH SIMILAR HEAT EXPECTED FRIDAY. IN ADDITION TO
THE HOT DAYTIME TEMPERATURES...EXPECT POOR OVERNIGHT HUMIDITY
RECOVERIES NEAR AND ABOVE A THERMAL BELT THAT HAS FORMED BETWEEN
2500 AND 4000 FT DUE TO STRONG SUBSIDENCE. FUELS ARE ALSO VERY
DRY...SO EXPECT CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS TO BE IN PLACE
THROUGH THE END OF THE WEEK.

THE FORECAST MODELS ARE INDICATING THAT THE THERMAL TROUGH WILL
FINALLY PUSH EAST OF THE CASCADES ON SATURDAY...ALTHOUGH THE
TIMING IS STILL SOMEWHAT IN QUESTION. THE UPPER LEVEL TROUGH IS
ALSO EXPECTED TO BEGIN GRADUALLY WEAKENING AND MOVING EAST OVER
THE WEEKEND. EXPECT TEMPS TO COOL A COUPLE OF DEGREES EACH
DAY...BUT IT WILL STILL BE QUITE WARM. AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH
PUSHING IN FROM THE NORTH WILL CONTINUE THE GRADUAL COOLING TREND
THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF NEXT WEEK. AS THE RIDGE AXIS SHIFTS
EAST...THE FORECAST MODELS ARE BRINGING INCREASING MID LEVEL
MOISTURE IN FROM THE SOUTH STARTING FRIDAY. THIS WILL BRING A
THREAT FOR ISOLATED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO THE CENTRAL
OREGON CASCADES EACH AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM FRIDAY THROUGH THE
FIRST HALF OF NEXT WEEK...WITH THE BEST THREAT LATE IN THE WEEKEND
OR EARLY NEXT WEEK. WEAGLE/PYLE
