PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT...CORRECTED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HASTINGS NE
237 PM CST SUN NOV 16 2014

...EXTENDED STRETCH OF UNUSUALLY-COLD NOVEMBER WEATHER CONTINUES...

THIS STATEMENT REFLECTS SOME UPDATED INFORMATION SINCE ITS ORIGINAL
ISSUANCE BACK ON NOV 13TH:

AS OF SUNDAY NOV. 16TH...MOST OF THE NWS HASTINGS COVERAGE AREA
OF SOUTH CENTRAL NEBRASKA AND NORTH CENTRAL KANSAS IS ENDURING ITS
6TH-CONSECUTIVE DAY OF TEMPERATURES BELOW THE FREEZING
MARK...WITH AT LEAST ONE AND POSSIBLY TWO MORE DAYS OF SUB-
FREEZING WEATHER IN STORE BEFORE A SLIGHT MODERATION PUSHES HIGH
TEMPERATURES AT LEAST SLIGHTLY ABOVE FREEZING DURING THE TUESDAY-
WEDNESDAY TIME FRAME.

USING THE PRIMARY CLIMATE DATA SITE WITHIN THE LOCAL AREA (GRAND
ISLAND CENTRAL NEBRASKA REGIONAL AIRPORT) AS A REFERENCE POINT...ITS
WORTH TAKING A LOOK AT WHERE THIS COLD SNAP HAS RANKED SO FAR DURING
THE FIVE DAYS FROM NOV. 11TH-15TH:

- DURING THE FIVE-DAY STRETCH FROM NOV. 11TH-15TH...THE AVERAGE
DAILY TEMPERATURE AT GRAND ISLAND (WHICH IS AN AVERAGE OF THE HIGHS
AND LOWS) WAS ONLY 17.8 DEGREES. CONSIDERING THAT THIS OCCURRED
DURING THE FIRST HALF OF NOVEMBER WHICH IS TYPICALLY MILDER THAN THE
SECOND HALF...THIS IS VERY NOTABLE COLD. IN FACT...THE LAST TIME
FIVE-CONSECUTIVE DAYS DURING THE FIRST HALF OF NOVEMBER AVERAGED
COLDER THAN THESE PAST 5 DAYS WAS 23 YEARS AGO IN 1991...WHEN THE
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FROM NOV. 2-6 WAS 17.4 DEGREES. TAKING A LONGER-
TERM HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE...THIS HAS BEEN THE 5TH-COLDEST
STRETCH OF FIVE NON-OVERLAPPING DAYS ON RECORD THAT OCCURRED
DURING THE FIRST HALF OF NOVEMBER (PLEASE NOTE THAT THE
STIPULATION OF NON- OVERLAPPING DAYS PREVENTS HAVING MULTIPLE
STRETCHES FROM THE SAME YEAR THAT INCLUDE MANY OF THE SAME DAYS).

FOLLOWING BELOW ARE RANKINGS OF THE TOP-5 COLDEST FIVE-DAY STRETCHES
OF AVERAGE TEMPERATURE ON RECORD DURING THE FIRST HALF OF NOVEMBER:

..GRAND ISLAND CENTRAL NEBRASKA REGIONAL AIRPORT..
(TEMPERATURE RECORDS DATE BACK 119 YEARS TO 1895)

1) 9.8 DEGREES...NOV 11-15, 1940
2) 14.8 DEGREES...NOV 9-13, 1986
