Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID
233 PM MDT Sun Apr 28 2024

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday night...Westerly flow
aloft continues today as a trough approaches the Pacific NW.
Continued breezy westerly winds this afternoon, with the
strongest winds in the Magic Valley (20-30mph) before becoming
light tonight. This trough will bring a cold front through the
area late tonight into Monday morning and bring scattered rain
and snow showers to the area. Precipitation will be limited in
the lower valleys with a 10-30 percent chance, with a 70-90
percent chance over the mountains in northeast OR and the west
central ID mountains. Snow levels will range around 5500-6500
feet MSL. Snow accumulations up to 2 inches on the highest
peaks with this system above 7000 feet. Temperatures on Monday
will be around 10-15 degrees below normal. The front will also
bring strong westerly winds on Monday afternoon, where a wind
advisory remains in effect for the Camas Prairie, Treasure and
Magic Valleys for wind gusts up to 50 mph. The upper level
trough will remain over the area on Tuesday, with continued cool
conditions and breezy conditions during the afternoon. Snow
showers will generally be focused over the higher terrain on
Tuesday afternoon with snow levels 3500-4500 ft MSL.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Sunday...The upper level trough
will remain over the area on Wednesday as it is reinforced by
another cold core system from the Gulf of Alaska. This system
will move overhead on Wednesday morning with a chance of snow
showers and snow levels around 2500-4000 feet. There is a
potential for snow to the valley floors but the current
forecast reflects ensemble mean. Wednesday will remain around
10-15 degrees below normal. Then slight ridging brings drier and
warmer conditions on Wednesday and Thursday. Forecast
confidence beyond Thursday is low as the ensembles do not have a
good handle on the remainder of the extended period. The
ensemble mean favors warmer and drier conditions with
temperatures rising to around 5 degrees above normal by
Saturday. However there is a chance of continued cool and
unsettled conditions lingering over the weekend.
