...AN INTENSE NOR`EASTER WILL CONTINUE TO BUILD LARGE WAVES ALONG
THE SOUTHWEST COAST OF MAINE AND THE NEW HAMPSHIRE SEACOAST
TODAY...

.AN INTENSE STORM WAS BRIEFLY STALLED JUST EAST OF CAPE COD THIS
MORNING. STRONG...STORM AND OCCASIONALLY HURRICANE FORCE
NORTHEASTERLY WINDS WILL CONTINUE OVER THE OUTER COASTAL WATERS
TODAY. NEARSHORE WAVES AS REPORTED BY BUOYS SEVERAL MILES OFF THE
COAST WILL CONTINUE TO BUILD INTO THE 20 TO 30 FOOT RANGE OFF
COASTAL YORK AND ROCKINGHAM COUNTIES TODAY.

DESPITE A VERY LOW ASTRONOMICAL HIGH TIDE OF 9.1 FEET IN PORTLAND
HARBOR FOR THIS AFTERNOON`S 5 PM HIGH TIDE...A STORM SURGE NEAR 3
FEET WILL BRING THE STORM TIDE IN PORTLAND TO ITS 12 FOOT FLOOD
STAGE LATE THIS AFTERNOON...LEADING TO LOCALIZED FLOODING OF LOW
LYING AREAS. THE HAMPTON TIDE GAGE WILL ALSO REACH AND EXCEED ITS
11 FOOT FLOOD STAGE. THESE TIDE LEVELS IN SOUTERNMOST MAINE AND
THE SEACOAST OF NEW HAMPSHIRE WILL LEAD TO STREET FLOODING IN THE
BACK BAY AREA OF HAMPTON...GRANITE POINT AND THE WHARF AREA IN
PORTLAND.

MORE IMPORTANTLY...LARGE...BATTERING WAVES WILL LEAD TO LOCALLY
SIGNIFICANT SPLASH-OVER AND BEACH EROSION. SPLASH-OVER MAY LEAD TO
LOCALIZED FLOODING BEHIND DUNE SYSTEMS AND BARRIERS. THE MOST
VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES WILL BE NORTHEAST FACING BEACHES ALONG
COASTAL YORK AND COASTAL ROCKINGHAM COUNTIES WHICH WILL BE EXPOSED
TO LARGE...BATTERING WAVES. ADVERSELY AFFECTED BEACHES
INCLUDE...BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO CAMP ELLIS BEACH...FORTUNES
ROCKS...MIDDLE BEACH...GOOCHES BEACH...WELLS BEACH...YORK
BEACH...RYE BEACH AND HAMPTON.

* IMPACTS...COASTAL FLOODING AND MODERATE SPLASHOVER WITH LOCALLY
  SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION ARE LIKELY AROUND HIGH TIDE.

* TIMING...WITHIN A COUPLE HOURS EITHER SIDE OF THE 5 PM HIGH TIDE
  LATE THIS AFTERNOON.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A COASTAL FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS OCCURRING OR
IMMINENT. COASTAL RESIDENTS IN THE WARNED AREA SHOULD BE ALERT
FOR RISING WATER...AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION TO PROTECT LIFE
AND PROPERTY.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY INDICATES THAT ONSHORE WINDS AND TIDES
WILL COMBINE TO GENERATE FLOODING OF LOW AREAS ALONG THE SHORE.
