ALTHOUGH THE MONTH STARTED OFF WITH A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 77
DEGREES ON APRIL 1, THIS WAS JUST A CRUEL TRICK OF NATURE. A
COLD FRONT BROUGHT MUCH COLDER WEATHER INTO THE AREA THE NEXT DAY. A
SNOWSTORM BROUGHT 2.7 INCHES OF SNOW ON APRIL 4 WITH RECORD COLD
TEMPERATURES FOR SEVERAL DAYS. THE LOW TEMPERATURE OF 4 DEGREES ON
APRIL 5 WAS THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE EVER OBSERVED IN THE MONTH OF
APRIL. ALTHOUGH THE CORE OF THE COLD AIR GRADUALLY DEPARTED, THE DRY
AIR REMAINED. THIS ALLOWED DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURES TO GRADUALLY
WARM WHILE NIGHTTIME LOWS STAYED COLD. THE TEMPERATURE WARMED ALL
THE WAY UP TO 80 DEGREES ON APRIL 21 BUT COLD AIR SOON FOLLOWED WITH
BELOW NORMAL WEATHER LASTING THROUGH THE LAST WEEK OF THE MONTH.
A TRACE OF SNOW WAS OBSERVED ON APRIL 26, A RARE SIGHT FOR LATE
APRIL.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 43.8 DEGREES WHICH WAS 1.3
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL AND THE COLDEST APRIL SINCE 2007. THIS ENDED
THE STREAK OF 5 STRAIGHT MONTHS OF ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES. THE
COLDEST APRIL ON RECORD WAS 1874 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 37.0
DEGREES. THE WARMEST WAS 1941 AT 51.4 DEGREES. ALTHOUGH THE AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS BELOW NORMAL, THE AVERAGE HIGH
TEMPERATURE WAS ACTUALLY ABOVE NORMAL. LOW TEMPERATURES WERE WELL
BELOW NORMAL RESULTING IN THE FIRST MONTH OF BELOW NORMAL AVERAGE
TEMPERATURES SINCE JUNE 2015.

THE LOW TEMPERATURE ON APRIL 5 WAS 4 DEGREES, THE COLDEST EVER
OBSERVED IN THE MONTH OF APRIL. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE ON THAT DATE
WAS 26, THE 3RD COLDEST EVER OBSERVED IN APRIL. THE FOLLOWING TABLES
LIST THE COLDEST LOW TEMPERATURES AND COLDEST HIGH TEMPERATURES IN
APRIL.

WETTEST APRIL WAS 1904 WITH 7.44 INCHES. THE DRIEST WAS 1941 WITH
ONLY 0.42 INCHES.

A TOTAL OF 2.7 INCHES OF SNOWFALL WAS OBSERVED. THIS WAS 0.1 INCHES
BELOW NORMAL. ALL OF THIS SNOW FELL ON APRIL 4. APRIL IS TYPICALLY
HIT OR MISS WITH SNOWFALL. THE SNOWIEST APRIL WAS 1874 WITH 35.0
INCHES. BUT THERE HAVE BEEN TEN YEARS WHERE NO SNOW WAS OBSERVED IN
APRIL, MOST RECENTLY IN 2012. THERE WERE AN ADDITIONAL 36 YEARS
WHICH ONLY OBSERVED A TRACE OF SNOWFALL IN APRIL, MOST RECENTLY IN
2010.
