...LIGHTNING SAFETY WEEK DAY FOUR...

...TODAYS TOPIC IS INDOOR LIGHTNING SAFETY...

WHEN INDOORS...LIGHTNING IS STILL A HAZARD. THERE ARE NUMEROUS
PATHWAYS FOR LIGHTNING TO REACH INSIDE A BUILDING AND CAUSE
INJURIES. ANY METAL OR CONDUCTIVE MATERIAL THAT CONNECTS THE OUTSIDE
OF A STRUCTURE AND THE INSIDE OF A STRUCTURE IS A RISK DURING A
THUNDERSTORM.

ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES...INCLUDING COMPUTERS...AND CORDED TELEPHONES
ARE DANGEROUS BECAUSE ELECTRICITY CAN MOVE THROUGH THE WIRES. METAL
PLUMBING IS ANOTHER HAZARD...AS THE LIGHTNING CAN MOVE THROUGH THE
PIPES. BATHTUBS AND SHOWERS...SINKS...FAUCETS...AND WASHING MACHINES
CAN BE DANGEROUS DURING THUNDERSTORMS. DO NOT LIE ON CONCRETE FLOORS
OR LEAN AGAINST CONCRETE WALLS...AS THESE CAN BECOME SATURATED WITH
RAIN WATER AND CONDUCT ELECTRICITY.

A DOG HOUSE DOES NOT PROVIDE MUCH PROTECTION FROM LIGHTNING...AND
CHAINS OR WIRE RUNNERS CAN CONDUCT ELECTRICITY FROM A LIGHTNING
STRIKE THROUGH YOUR PET. BRING PETS INDOORS DURING THUNDERSTORMS.

TO PROTECT YOUR ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT...UNPLUG IT FROM THE WALL
SOCKETS.

REMEMBER...WHEN YOU HEAR THUNDER...THE LIGHTNING IS CLOSE ENOUGH TO
STRIKE YOU. GO INTO AN ENCLOSED SHELTER IMMEDIATELY...AND REMAIN
THERE FOR THIRTY MINUTES AFTER YOU HEAR THE LAST SOUND OF THUNDER.
