URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE

...MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW FOR THE SOUTH SHORE IN NORTHWEST
WISCONSIN TONIGHT INTO THURSDAY MORNING...

.COLD NORTHERLY FLOW WILL CONTINUE OVER WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR
TONIGHT...SETTING THE STAGE FOR MODERATE TO HEAVY LAKE EFFECT
SNOW ACCUMULATIONS FOR PORTIONS OF NORTHWEST WISCONSIN THROUGH
THURSDAY MORNING. THE GREATEST SNOWFALL INTENSITY WILL OCCUR THIS
EVENING THROUGH MIDNIGHT. WIDESPREAD SNOWFALL TOTALS OF 3 TO 6
INCHES ARE EXPECTED...BUT THE NORTHERN PORTIONS OF ASHLAND AND
IRON COUNTIES CAN EXPECT ABOUT 6 TO 12 INCHES. TRAVEL WILL BE
DIFFICULT TONIGHT DUE TO THE ACCUMULATING SNOW AND LOW VISIBILITY
IN THE HEAVIER SNOW BANDS. THE LAKE EFFECT SNOW WILL GRADUALLY
DIMINISH LATE TONIGHT AND THURSDAY MORNING.

THURSDAY...

* LOCATION...ASHLAND AND IRON COUNTIES.

* TIMING...LAKE EFFECT SNOW WILL CONTINUE THIS EVENING THROUGH
  TONIGHT. SNOWFALL INTENSITY WILL PEAK THIS EVENING THROUGH
  MIDNIGHT...THEN GRADUALLY DIMINISH INTO THURSDAY MORNING.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...THE NORTHERN PORTION OF IRON AND ASHLAND
  COUNTY CAN EXPECT WIDESPREAD TOTALS OF 6 TO 9 INCHES. THE STATE
  HIGHWAYS 13...17...AND 169 IN THE AREA NEAR AND BETWEEN
  MARENGO...MELLEN...UPSON...AND GURNEY WILL SEE THE HIGHEST
  TOTALS...AS MUCH AS 12 INCHES.

* WINDS/VISIBILITY...GUSTY NORTH WINDS AND HEAVY SNOWFALL RATES
  WILL REDUCE VISIBILITIES TO A QUARTER MILE OR LESS AT TIMES.

* IMPACTS...TRAVEL CONDITIONS WILL DETERIORATE THIS EVENING.
  WEATHER CONDITIONS WILL GRADUALLY IMPROVE THURSDAY MORNING.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF LAKE-
EFFECT SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS OR
IMPOSSIBLE. LAKE-EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS TYPICALLY ALIGN THEMSELVES
IN BANDS AND WILL LIKELY BE INTENSE ENOUGH TO DROP 1 TO SEVERAL
INCHES OF SNOW PER HOUR FOR SEVERAL HOURS. VISIBILITIES VARY
GREATLY AND CAN DROP TO ZERO WITHIN MINUTES.  TRAVEL IS STRONGLY
DISCOURAGED. COMMERCE COULD BE SEVERELY IMPACTED. IF YOU MUST
TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT...FOOD...AND WATER IN YOUR
VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.

  PEAK THIS EVENING AND DIMINISH OVERNIGHT.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...WIDESPREAD 4 TO 6 INCHES OVER NORTHEAST
  DOUGLAS COUNTY AND MUCH OF BAYFIELD COUNTY. THE HIGHEST
  AMOUNTS...ABOUT 6 TO 8 INCHES...CAN BE EXPECTED OVER THE
  HIGHWAY 13 CORRIDOR IN NORTHERN BAYFIELD COUNTY.

* WINDS/VISIBILITY...GUSTY NORTH WINDS WILL REDUCE VISIBILITY IN
  THE HEAVIER SNOW BANDS TO A HALF MILE OR LESS AT TIMES.

* IMPACTS...TRAVEL CONDITIONS WILL DETERIORATE THIS EVENING.
  WEATHER CONDITIONS WILL GRADUALLY AFTER MIDNIGHT.
