Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD
426 AM CDT Mon Apr 22 2024

.DISCUSSION...

Strong winds are expected mainly along and east of a Windom, MN to
Canton, SD, to Yankton, SD line where southerly winds will gust up
to 45 mph. These winds will be strongest in the morning before
slowly waning through the early afternoon hours. A cold front
pushing through the area today briefly result in weaker winds before
winds restrengthen out of the northwest behind the front. Gusts up
to 35 mph are expected in the northwest flow but gusts could be
stronger if mixing overachieves this afternoon. high temperatures
will warm to the upper 60s and 70s while dew points lower to the 20s
and 30s behind the front. This will result in a large area of 20-30%
relative humidity, lowest west of the previously mentioned line.
Despite the relative humidity and winds meeting critical fire danger
criteria, fuels will not. Fuels have been greening thanks to recent
rainfall and thus are keeping fire danger only up to high for this
afternoon. Still expect elevated fire danger where fuels have not
been greening up. Fire danger will come to an end this evening and
temperatures begin to cool.

Highs will be a bit cooler on Tuesday with highs only warming up to
the mid 50s to mid 60s. Winds remain gusty within the northwest flow
regime with gusts up to around 35 mph expected. However, with dew
points slightly moistening into the 30s, relative humidity values
will only fall to 35-45%. Above criteria humidity and greening fuels
will keep fire danger down to moderate for Tuesday afternoon.

...HIGH FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the high category
this afternoon. Unfavorable weather conditions and low
moisture content of grasses, and other dry organic material
on the ground, indicate that there is a high potential for
a fire to spread.. Outdoor burning should be restricted to
early morning or evening hours, when wind speeds are usually
lower and the relative humidity is higher.

OUTLOOK FOR TUESDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the moderate category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.
