Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Huntsville AL
1005 AM CDT Mon Apr 22 2024

...New NEAR TERM...

.NEAR TERM...
(Rest of Today)
Issued at 1005 AM CDT Mon Apr 22 2024

Dry northwest flow aloft will continue across the TN Valley
today, as a low-amplitude ridge aloft shifts across the region in
the wake of a shortwave trough spreading eastward off the southern
Mid-Atlantic Coast. This will ensure sunny skies and dry
conditions, as a surface ridge builds eastward into the forecast
area this afternoon. Due to abundant sunshine and weakening cold
advection throughout the day, highs will be a few degrees warmer
compared to yesterday, ranging from the lower 60s atop the
Cumberland Plateau to the mid-upper 60s in valley locations.

.SHORT TERM...
(Tonight through Thursday)
Issued at 220 AM CDT Mon Apr 22 2024

Another cool night thanks to the dry air mass in place across the
region and the clear skies and light winds -- pushing lows into
the upper 30s to lower 40s in most locations once again. High
pressure will continue to remain in place over the region during a
Tuesday to Thursday timeframe, with continued mostly sunny and dry
conditions forecast. In turn, this will result in highs reaching
the low to mid 70s each day, with lows in the low to mid 50s. The
only weather feature of note will be a shortwave through that will
push SE across the region Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
The air mass will be moisture starved ahead of it, so the only
weather of note will be some cloud cover (save for some low
chances (20%) of rain showers in southern middle Tennessee) during
this Tuesday night to Wednesday morning timeframe. Otherwise, we
can enjoy mostly sunny and dry conditions through the midweek
period.

.LONG TERM...
(Thursday night through Sunday)
Issued at 220 AM CDT Mon Apr 22 2024

A ridge axis will amplify over the Tennessee Valley Friday into
the upcoming weekend. Winds will veer to the SW/S, advecting in a
warmer, more moist air mass as highs return to the upper 70s to
lower 80s each day. Long range ensembles are still hinting at a
trough swinging from the Southern Plains into the Mid Mississippi
Valley late this weekend into early next week. At least low
chances for showers and storms may be needed in the forecast by
Sunday or next Monday as this system will provide out best chance
for precipitation in over a week.
