DECEMBER STARTED OFF WARM AND WET WITH MORE THAN AN INCH OF RAINFALL
ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE MONTH. TEMPERATURES SOON BEGAN TURNING
COLDER WITH AN ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN BRINGING A NEW STORM SYSTEM
THROUGH THE AREA EVERY FEW DAYS, OFTEN RESULTING IN SNOWFALL. A VERY
COLD EARLY SEASON ARCTIC AIR MASS MOVED INTO THE AREA DURING THE
MIDDLE OF THE MONTH. ON THE 16TH THE HIGH TEMPERATURE ONLY MADE IT
UP TO 4 DEGREES, THE COLDEST DECEMBER HIGH TEMPERATURE IN 40 YEARS.
AFTER A BRIEF WARMUP ON THE 18TH THE COLD AIR RETURNED AGAIN FOR THE
19TH AND 20TH. BY THE 21ST THE BRUTAL COLD HAD EASED UP A BIT WITH
TEMPERATURES NEAR OR ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE REST OF THE MONTH. AN
INTENSE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM TRACKING THROUGH THE GULF OF MAINE
BROUGHT MORE SNOW ON THE 29TH AND 30TH.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 24.6 DEGREES WHICH WAS 1.5
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL AND THE FIRST BELOW NORMAL MONTH SINCE JUNE. IT
WAS MORE THAN 10 DEGREES COLDER THAN THE RECORD WARM DECEMBER
OBSERVED LAST YEAR. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN DECEMBER 2015 WAS
34.8 DEGREES, THE WARMEST ON RECORD. THE COLDEST ON RECORD WAS 1989
WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 11.0 DEGREES.

THE HIGH TEMPERATURE ON DECEMBER 16 WAS ONLY 4 DEGREES. THIS WAS THE
COLDEST DECEMBER HIGH TEMPERATURE IN 40 YEARS AND THE 4TH COLDEST ON
RECORD. THE FOLLOWING TABLE LISTS THE COLDEST HIGH TEMPERATURES IN
DECEMBER AT AUGUSTA.

COLDEST DECEMBER HIGH TEMPERATURE (SINCE 1948)...

10 5 DEC 25, 1983 AND 4 OTHERS

A TOTAL OF 3.97 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL WHICH WAS 0.73 INCHES
ABOVE NORMAL. THE HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION WAS ON DECEMBER 1 WHEN MORE
THAN 1 INCH OF RAIN WAS RECORDED. THE WETTEST DECEMBER ON RECORD WAS
IN 1973 WHEN 12.58 INCHES WAS MEASURED. THE DRIEST WAS 1980 WITH
ONLY 0.89 INCHES.

THE FOLLOWING DAILY RECORDS WERE SET OR TIED IN DECEMBER 2016...
