THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF JANUARY WERE MILD AND WET. A COLD FRONT ON THE
4TH USHERED IN COLDER AIR WHICH LASTED FOR SEVERAL DAYS. THE
TEMPERATURE DROPPED BELOW ZERO ON THREE STRAIGHT DAYS FROM THE 8TH
THROUGH THE 9TH. BUT THIS COLD WAS QUICKLY REPLACED BY MUCH WARMER
AIR WHEN THE NEXT THREE DAYS EACH TOPPED 50 DEGREES. A LITTLE COOLER
AIR MOVED IN AGAIN FOR THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH, THOUGH TEMPERATURES
REMAINED ABOVE NORMAL. THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL OF THE MONTH WAS ON THE
17TH AND 18TH WHEN MORE THAN 5 INCHES OF SNOW FELL. ANOTHER STORM
SYSTEM BROUGHT SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN ON THE 23RD AND 24TH. MILD
WEATHER CONTINUED THROUGH MUCH OF THE REST OF THE MONTH.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 28.5 DEGREES WHICH WAS 7.9
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL AND THE WARMEST JANUARY SINCE 2006. THE WARMEST
JANUARY WAS IN 1932 WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 31.8 DEGREES.
THE COLDEST WAS ONLY 10.6 DEGREES IN 1977.

A TOTAL OF 2.24 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL WHICH WAS 0.46 INCHES
BELOW NORMAL. THE HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION FELL ON THE 3RD AND 4TH
WHEN 0.76 INCHES WAS MEASURED. THE DRIEST JANUARY WAS IN 1970 WHEN
ONLY 0.40 INCHES FELL. THE WETTEST WAS 1979 WITH 8.09 INCHES.

A TOTAL OF 8.9 INCHES OF SNOW FELL WHICH WAS 9.2 INCHES BELOW NORMAL
AND THE LEAST SNOWY JANUARY SINCE 2007. THE HEAVIEST SNOW FELL ON
THE 17TH AND 18TH WHEN 5.3 INCHES WAS MEASURED. THE SNOWIEST JANUARY
ON RECORD WAS IN 1935 WHEN 46.7 INCHES WAS RECORDED. THE LEAST SNOWY
WAS IN 1955 WITH ONLY 0.9 INCHES.

NO DAILY RECORDS WERE SET OR TIED IN JANUARY 2017.
