WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 84.6 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT OBSERVED LAST
MONTH, 1.4 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL, SEPTEMBER 2017 RANKED AS THE 11TH
WARMEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD FOR KEY WEST. THE WARMEST SEPTEMBER ON
RECORD WAS BACK IN 1951, WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 85.2 DEGREES.
TEMPERATURE RECORDS IN KEY WEST DATE BACK TO 1872.

DESPITE NEARLY 6 INCHES OF RAINFALL ATTRIBUTED TO HURRICANE IRMA
IN EARLY SEPTEMBER, LAST MONTH`S TOTAL OF 9.28 INCHES, 2.57 INCHES
ABOVE NORMAL, WAS NOT HIGH ENOUGH TO BREAK INTO THE TOP 20 FOR THE
WETTEST SEPTEMBERS ON RECORD. THE WETTEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD FOR
KEY WEST WAS BACK IN 1963, WHEN 18.45 INCHES OF RAINFALL WAS
MEASURED. RAINFALL RECORDS IN KEY WEST DATE BACK TO 1871.

HURRICANE IRMA MADE LANDFALL ON CUDJOE KEY, IN THE LOWER KEYS, AT
910 AM EDT SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10TH, 2017.A WIND GUST OF 120 MPH WAS
RECORDED BY A RAWS SITE ON BIG PINE KEY, AROUND 938 AM EDT. THE
HIGHEST WIND GUST RECORDED AT THE KEY WEST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
DURING THIS EVENT WAS 94 MPH AT 713 AM EDT, BUT THE ANEMOMETER
FAILED SHORTLY AFTER THAT TIME.
