.DECEMBER 2017 WAS COLDER THAN NORMAL WITH ABOVE NORMAL
PRECIPITATION AT INTERNATIONAL FALLS MN...

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR DECEMBER WAS 5.9 DEGREES WHICH WAS 3.8
DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 9.7. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE FOR THE
MONTH WAS 40 DEGREES ON THE 2ND AND 3RD. THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE WAS
37 DEGREES BELOW ZERO ON THE 27TH. TWO DAILY TEMPERATURE RECORDS
WERE BROKEN FOR THE MONTH. A NEW RECORD WAS SET ON THE 26TH FOR A
LOW MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 12 DEGREES BELOW ZERO. THIS TIED THE
PREVIOUS RECORD OF 12 DEGREES BELOW ZERO IN 1993. ANOTHER RECORD WAS
SET ON THE 27TH FOR A NEW LOW TEMPERATURE OF 37 DEGREES BELOW ZERO.
THIS BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 32 DEGREES BELOW ZERO IN 1924. 17
DAYS HAD AVERAGE TEMPERATURES BELOW NORMAL.

DECEMBER 2017 WAS ABOVE NORMAL FOR PRECIPITATION WITH A TOTAL OF
1.16 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION RECORDED FOR THE MONTH. THIS WAS 0.35
INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 0.81 INCHES. THE GREATEST AMOUNT OF
PRECIPITATION IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD OCCURRED ON THE 4TH WHEN 0.42
INCHES WAS RECORDED. AT LEAST A TRACE OF PRECIPITATION WAS RECORDED
ON 26 DAYS. AT LEAST 0.01 INCHES FELL ON 16 DAYS. AT LEAST 0.10
INCHES FELL ON 3 DAYS. ONE DAILY PRECIPITATION RECORD WAS BROKEN FOR

SNOWFALL RECORD WAS BROKEN FOR THE MONTH. ON DECEMBER 18TH A TOTAL
OF 4.8 INCHES OF SNOW WAS RECORDED. THIS BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD
OF 3.0 INCHES SET IN 1992.

THE AVERAGE WIND SPEED FOR THE MONTH WAS 6.9 MPH. THE WINDIEST DAY
OF THE MONTH WAS ON THE 5TH WITH AN AVERAGE WIND OF 18.1 MPH. THE
HIGHEST SUSTAINED WIND OCCURRED ON THE 4TH AND 5TH WITH A SPEED OF
30 MPH. A PEAK GUST OF 39 MPH WAS RECORDED ON THE 5TH OUT OF THE
WEST.

THERE WERE 1827 HEATING DEGREE DAYS FOR THE MONTH WHICH WAS 113

REACHED ON THE 31ST AND THE LOWEST SEA LEVEL PRESSURE READING WAS
29.31 INCHES REACHED ON THE 4TH.

THE OUTLOOK FOR JANUARY...NORMAL HIGHS ARE IN THE MID TEENS. NORMAL
LOWS ARE IN THE SINGLE DIGITS BELOW ZERO. NORMAL PRECIPITATION FOR
JANUARY IS 0.62 INCHES. NORMAL SNOWFALL FOR JANUARY IS 15.0 INCHES.
THE LATEST CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER OUTLOOK INDICATES THAT THERE IS
A 40% CHANCE FOR BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND A 33% CHANCE FOR
BELOW NORMAL PRECIPICATION.
