THE FALL LIKE WEATHER PATTERN WHICH HAD FINALLY ARRIVED FOR THE LAST
PART OF SEPTEMBER CONTINUED INTO OCTOBER. WARM WEATHER WOULD BUILD
INTO THE AREA FOR A FEW DAYS BEFORE A COLD FRONT WOULD BRING LIGHT
RAIN AND A RETURN TO COOLER TEMPERATURES. THE FIRST FREEZING
TEMPERATURE OF THE SEASON WAS OBSERVED ON OCTOBER 15, ABOUT ONE WEEK
LATER THAN NORMAL BUT THE EARLIEST FALL FREEZE SINCE 2012. THIS
PATTERN REPEATED ITSELF SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE SHOWING SIGNS OF A
CHANGE IN MID OCTOBER WHEN MUCH WARMER AIR MOVED IN DURING THE THIRD
WEEK OF THE MONTH. FROM THE 16TH THROUGH THE 22ND THE TEMPERATURE
AVERAGED 8 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL, PEAKING OUT AT A HIGH OF 78 DEGREES
ON THE 19TH. ON OCTOBER 21 TROPICAL MOISTURE SURGED NORTHWARD AHEAD
OF A COLD FRONT AND LED TO A PERIOD OF VERY HEAVY RAINFALL DURING
THE EVENING AND INTO THE MORNING OF THE 22ND. OVER THE COURSE OF
JUST A FEW HOURS 4.27 INCHES OF RAIN FELL. COOLER AIR MOVED IN
BEHIND THIS SYSTEM AND FOR THE MOST PART CONTINUED THROUGH THE REST
OF THE MONTH. A NOR`EASTER TRACKING OFFSHORE BROUGHT MORE HEAVY RAIN
LATER IN THE MONTH WITH MORE THAN 2 INCHES OF RAIN OBSERVED ON THE
28TH. THE TWO MAJOR RAINSTORMS DURING THE LAST HALF OF THE MONTH
HELPED TO PUT A DENT IN THE DROUGHT WHICH HAD INTENSIFIED THROUGH
THE SUMMER AND INTO THE EARLY FALL.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 50.4 DEGREES WHICH WAS 1.6
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE WARMEST OCTOBER ON RECORD WAS IN 1947 WHEN
THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 55.3 DEGREES. THE COOLEST WAS 43.5
DEGREES IN 1976.

A TOTAL OF 8.36 INCHES OF RAIN FELL WHICH WAS 3.49 INCHES ABOVE
NORMAL AND THE 6TH WETTEST ON RECORD. IT WAS THE WETTEST OCTOBER
SINCE 2005. ALMOST ALL OF THAT RAIN FELL DURING THE TWO MAJOR
RAINSTORMS IN THE LAST HALF OF THE MONTH, INCLUDING 3.81 INCHES ON
THE 21ST AND 2.24 INCHES ON THE 28TH. ALTHOUGH THIS WAS THE 6TH
WETTEST OCTOBER ON RECORD, IT STILL RECORDED LESS THAN HALF THE
PRECIPITATION RECORDED IN 1996, THE WETTEST MONTH ON RECORD AT
PORTLAND. IN 1996 THERE WAS 16.86 INCHES OF RAIN MEASURED AT
PORTLAND. THE DRIEST OCTOBER WAS IN 1924 WHEN ONLY 0.09 INCHES WAS
OBSERVED. THE FOLLOWING TABLE LISTS THE WETTEST OCTOBERS ON RECORD.

MOST PRECIPITATION IN OCTOBER (SINCE 1871)
RANK PRECIP YEAR
1 16.86 1996
2 14.38 2005
3 12.27 1962
4 10.45 1998
5 8.38 2006
6      8.36   2016 <===
7 8.30 1977
8 7.47 1888
9 7.46 1990
10 7.10 2010

THERE WAS NO SNOW OBSERVED IN OCTOBER 2016. SNOW IS RELATIVELY RARE
IN OCTOBER WITH AT LEAST A TRACE OF SNOW OBSERVED 49 TIMES IN THE
LAST 136 YEARS. MEASURABLE SNOW HAS ONLY BEEN RECORDED ON 12 OF
THOSE YEARS, MOST RECENTLY IN 2011. THE SNOWIEST OCTOBER ON RECORD
WAS IN 2011 WHEN 5.2 INCHES OF SNOW FELL.

NO DAILY RECORDS WERE SET OR TIED IN OCTOBER 2016.
