THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN COLUMBIA HAS ISSUED A

* FLASH FLOOD WARNING FOR...
  CENTRAL ORANGEBURG COUNTY IN CENTRAL SOUTH CAROLINA...  THIS
  INCLUDES THE CITIES OF...ORANGEBURG...BROOKDALE...AND CORDOVA.

* UNTIL 200 AM EDT TUESDAY

* AT 755 PM EDT...NEARLY STATIONARY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS
CONTINUED OVER THE CITY OF ORANGEBURG AND SURROUNDING AREAS. THOUGH
THE INTENSITY OF THE RAINFALL HAS DIMINISHED SLIGHTLY...RUNOFF FROM
PREVIOUS HEAVY RAINS WILL LEAD TO A CONTINUED CONCERN FOR FLOODING
OF STREETS AND LOW LYING AREAS IN THE CITY OF ORANGEBURG.
ADDITIONAL FLOODING WILL OCCUR NEAR THE NORTH FORK OF THE EDISTO
RIVER FROM ORANGEBURG...SOUTHWEST TO NEAR CORDOVA AND
ROWESVILLE....AND FURTHER SOUTHWEST TO NEAR COPE AND BRANCHVILLE TO
NEAR THE SOUTH FORK OF THE EDISTO RIVER AND THE BAMBERG COUNTY LINE.

SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL AMOUNTS HAVE FALLEN OVER THE AREA.  A REPORT OF
NEARLY 9 INCHES OF RAIN HAS BEEN RECEIVED FROM THE PUBLIC NEAR
CORDOVA.

NEARLY 7 INCHES OF RAIN HAS BEEN MEASURED SO FAR AT THE ORANGEBURG
WATER TREATMENT PLANT SINCE LATE AFTERNOON. THE SOUTH FORK OF THE
EDISTO RIVER IS RISING RAPIDLY. AREAS NEAR THE RIVER AND ASSOCIATED
TRIBUTARIES AND LOW LYING BASINS MAY BE FLOODED...AND MAY REMAIN
FLOODED THROUGH LATE TONIGHT.

LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS REPORT SOME ROADS WASHED OUT...AND
SOME RESCUES OF MOTORISTS...THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN ORANGEBURG.

MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED THAT TRAVEL NEAR ORANGEBURG AND SURROUNDING
AREAS IS DISCOURAGED. FLOOD WATERS MAY BE ESPECIALLY DIFFICULT TO
DETECT AT NIGHT. SOME ROADS AND BRIDGES MAY BE COVERED BY WATER. DO
NOT CROSS A ROAD OR BRIDGE THAT IS COVERED BY WATER.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

EXCESSIVE RUNOFF FROM HEAVY RAINFALL WILL CAUSE FLOODING OF SMALL
CREEKS AND STREAMS...HIGHWAYS AND UNDERPASSES. ADDITIONALLY...COUNTRY
ROADS AND FARMLANDS ALONG THE BANKS OF CREEKS...STREAMS AND OTHER LOW
LYING AREAS ARE SUBJECT TO FLOODING.

BE ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS AT NIGHT WHEN IT IS HARDER TO RECOGNIZE THE
DANGERS OF FLOODING. IF FLASH FLOODING IS OBSERVED ACT QUICKLY. MOVE
UP TO HIGHER GROUND TO ESCAPE FLOOD WATERS. DO NOT STAY IN AREAS
SUBJECT TO FLOODING WHEN WATER BEGINS RISING.
