SUMMARY

TEMPERATURES IN SOUTHWEST LOWER MICHIGAN DURING JULY WERE WELL BELOW
NORMAL. IT WAS THE 5TH COLDEST JULY ON RECORD FOR GRAND RAPIDS...
AND THE 7TH COLDEST ON RECORD FOR MUSKEGON. IN FACT... GRAND
RAPIDS... LANSING AND MUSKEGON ALL FAILED TO REACH 90 DEGREES. THIS
IS THE FIRST SUMMER SINCE 1989 GRAND RAPIDS HAS NOT HIT 90 DEGREES
BY THE END OF JULY. IT IS THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2004 LANSING HAS
FAILED TO REACH 90 BY JULY 31ST. ACTIVE WEATHER WAS FAIRLY COMMON
WITH A FEW SIGNIFICANT SEVERE WEATHER EVENTS. PRECIPITATION WAS
ABOVE NORMAL IN JULY 2014 IN SOUTHWEST LOWER MICHIGAN.

AVERAGE TEMPERATURES WERE 4-5 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL DURING JULY 2014.
THIS JULY WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE 10 COLDEST ON RECORD. HIGHS
WERE FAIRLY STEADY IN THE 70S THROUGH A LARGE PORTION OF THE
MONTH... WITH A FEW SPIKES INTO THE 80S WITH STRONG SOUTHERLY FLOW.
AFTER THE PASSAGE OF A STRONG COLD FRONT... HIGH TEMPERATURES FAILED
TO REACH EVEN 70 DEGREES ON JULY 15TH. GRAND RAPIDS SET A RECORD
COLDEST HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 71 DEGREES ON JULY 16TH. THAT BROKE THE
OLD RECORD OF 74 DEGREES SET IN 1958.

THE BULK OF SOUTHWEST LOWER MICHIGAN RECEIVED ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL
IN JULY... WITH THE I-94 CORRIDOR NEAR NORMAL AND THE LUDINGTON AREA
SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL. MOST OF THE RAINFALL FELL BETWEEN JULY 6-8
AND JULY 12-14 AS TWO LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMS MOVED ACROSS THE GREAT
LAKES REGION.

SEVERAL EPISODES OF SEVERE WEATHER AFFECTED SOUTHWEST LOWER MICHIGAN
IN JULY. A NOW WELL-KNOWN EF-1 TORNADO STRUCK BYRON CENTER...
WYOMING AND KENTWOOD LATE ON THE EVENING OF JULY 6TH. THE TORNADO
WAS ON THE GROUND FOR APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES AND CAUSED QUITE A
BIT OF DAMAGE IN A DENSELY POPULATED AREA. LATER THAT NIGHT... 3
MORE TORNADOES TOUCHED DOWN. 2 TOUCHED DOWN IN IONIA COUNTY AND 1
IN CLINTON COUNTY. ALL 3 WERE RATED EF-0.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IMPACTED THE AREA ON JULY 27TH AS WELL... BUT
THIS TIME THE PRIMARY THREAT WAS HAIL. THERE WERE SEVERAL HAIL
REPORTS. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CAME FROM COOPER TWP IN KALAMAZOO
COUNTY. 2 INCH DIAMETER HAIL OCCURRED IN COOPER... WITH SEVERAL
OTHER LOCATIONS RECEIVING PENNY TO QUARTER SIZE HAIL.
