PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE QUAD CITIES IA IL
1107 AM CDT TUE MAR 18 2014

...NATIONAL FLOOD SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK IS MARCH 16 TO 22ND...

FLOODING IS THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE FOR WEATHER RELATED DEATHS IN
THE UNITED STATES. ON AVERAGE FLOODING CLAIMS THE LIVES OF 89
PEOPLE EACH YEAR. MOST OF THESE DEATHS OCCUR IN MOTOR VEHICLES
WHEN PEOPLE ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THROUGH FLOODED ROADWAYS. MANY OTHER
PEOPLE DIE WHEN THEY WALK INTO FLOOD WATERS.

MOST FLOODING DEATHS ARE PREVENTABLE WITH THE RIGHT KNOWLEDGE.

IT IS NEVER SAFE TO DRIVE OR WALK TROUGH FLOOD WATER. JUST SIX
INCHES OF FAST- MOVING WATER CAN KNOCK OVER AN ADULT...WHILE ONLY
18 INCHES OF FLOWING WATER CAN CARRY AWAY VEHICLES. IT IS
DIFFICULT TO ESTIMATE THE FORCE AND POWER OF WATER WHEN IT IS
MOVING...AND IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL THE EXACT DEPTH OF THE WATER OR
CONDITION OF THE ROAD BELOW THE WATER.

ANYTIME YOU COME TO A FLOODED ROAD...WALKWAY...OR PATH FOLLOW THIS
SIMPLE RULE. TURN AROUND DONT DROWN.
