...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH
THURSDAY EVENING...

.DISCUSSION...

Elevated to near-critical fire weather conditions are expected
across much of central and western Nebraska Wednesday, largely due
to anticipated wind gusts behind a frontal passage later this
afternoon.

Afternoon highs will reach the middle 60s with steady northwest
winds around 10 to 20 mph and gusts as high as 25 mph through
early afternoon. These speeds will increase this evening behind a
frontal passage which will not consist of a noteworthy wind shift.
By late afternoon, expect steady winds around 20 mph and gusts
nearing 40 mph. Afternoon humidity minimums will fall to around
the 20 to 30 percent range and with expected strong winds through
the overnight, humidity recovery will be limited to around 60 to
70 percent with steady winds continuing through sunrise Thursday.

One concern for fire weather today will be the threat for isolated
rain showers later this afternoon. While QPF will be greatly
limited to only a few hundredths in very localized areas, concern
is increasing for gusty erratic winds in close proximity to these
showers. Should one approach the fire location, erratic and brief
gusts in the 40 to 50 mph range cannot be ruled out. Precise
timing of this potential focuses around 4pm to 8pm but confidence
in this is medium at best until activity develops and moves
southeast.

A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for much of central and eastern
Nebraska on Thursday due to the combination of strong winds and
low afternoon humidity. Similar conditions are forecast Friday
although winds appear to be weaker thus precluding any headlines
at this time.
