Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
227 AM PDT Wed Mar 13 2024
.SYNOPSIS...Scattered snow showers will continue through this
evening and will end for most of the forecast area tonight. While
most of the area will be dry on Thursday, snow showers will
continue in eastern White Pine County. It will be breezy to windy
through Thursday. A drying and warming trend is in store Friday
through the weekend.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Post frontal snow showers and breezy winds have
been observed this morning across the CWA with showers mainly
south of I-80 and along HWY93. An upper low diving south from
Idaho down to southern NV will keep scattered snow showers over
the mountains today, and several inches of new snow will be
observed along the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt range. 3-6
inches of new snow are forecast for the Jarbidge Mountains today.
These areas are currently under a Winter Weather Advisory this
morning. Another focus for today`s weather will be the increasing
winds and localized blowing snow. North winds at the surface and
aloft will increase as the upper low moves south, and bitterly
cold wind chills will be observed. Afternoon temperatures in the
30s to mid 40s will feel more like the teens and 20s. Most of the
area will observe north winds sustained 15-30 mph, and confidence
is high that northern Nye County and southeastern Elko County will
observe 45 mph gusts as supported by the probability forecast of
the NBM. NBM probabilities decrease to around 35-40% for gusts
50-55 mph in these areas. The wind advisory today through Thursday
looks on track. Patchy blowing snow will be observed this
afternoon and tonight in areas where fresh snow has fallen,
primarily above 7500 feet.
Precipitation ends for most of the forecast area late tonight and
Thursday with the exception of eastern White Pine County along the
Snake Range and Schell Creek Range. The closed low over AZ will
circulate precipitation over southern NV and provide wrap around
snow showers along the NV/UT border. The highest peaks will have
moderate snow with amounts around 3-6 inches. Thursday will be
warmer with highs mainly in the upper 30s to upper 40s...locally
in the lower 50s in Humboldt County. Breezy to windy conditions
will continue on Thursday.
.LONG TERM...Friday through next Wednesday.
Rex block remains in place Friday with the center of a robust
upper low projected to be circulating over the southern most tip
of Nevada. Gusty northeasterly winds persist thru Friday across
the entire forecast area, though winds look to remain below
advisory thresholds. Numerical guidance indicates lighter
northeasterly winds Saturday and into next week with afternoon
breezes and mostly light winds overnight. Otherwise weather will
be dry under mostly sunny and clear skies for northern Nevada into
next week.
Locations in and near NE. Nye and White Pine Counties will see
greater cloud cover and light showers lingering Friday as moisture
and showers wrap around the low and move into the area from the
east. Any accumulating valley rain or snow will be very light with
no significant accumulation or impacts expected. Showery yet more
consistent activity over the high terrain in the form of snow,
especially along the east slopes as upslope enhancement is
anticipated. Light mountain snow accumulations are possible each
day Friday and thru at least Saturday. Great Basin National Park
and the Snake Range in general likely to receive the greatest
accumulations with an additional 1-2 inches possible.
Daytime high temperatures Friday reside in the mid 40s to mid 50s
with overnight lows in the upper teens to upper 20s. Gradual
warming trend takes place thru the weekend and early next week.
Potential for daytime highs around 70 degrees across much of
Humboldt County and near Gabbs in NW. Nye County on Tuesday.
&&
.AVIATION...Snow showers briefly reduced CIGs and VIS to IFR at
KELY, but conditions are slowly improving with MVFR CIGs at this
time. Otherwise, VFR conditions are expected at all terminals
today. There is a 15-25% chance of snow showers at KBAM KEKO and
KELY later this morning through early evening, which may result
in brief reductions to CIGs and VIS. Northwesterly winds will gust
15-30kts this afternoon and into this evening.
