...MEDFORD OREGON ANNUAL WEATHER REVIEW: 2013...

THE YEAR OF 2013 WAS THE DRIEST ON RECORD WITH ONLY 8.99 INCHES
OF PRECIPITATION; EASILY SURPASSING THE OLD RECORD OF 10.42 IN 1959.
ONLY TWO MONTHS HAD ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION; AUGUST WITH 0.02
INCHES ABOVE NORMAL AND THE ONLY VERY WET MONTH OF THE YEAR; SEPTEMBER
WITH 2.19 INCHES ABOVE THE NORM. JANUARY AND FEBRUARY STARTED THE YEAR
WITH PERSISTENT HIGH PRESSURE AND BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES. TEMPERATURES
ROSE TO ABOVE NORMAL IN THE SPRING MONTHS AND STAYED THAT WAY THROUGH
THE SUMMER. THE FALL MONTHS ALL HAD BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES. DECEMBER
ENDED THE YEAR AS THE COLDEST DECEMBER SINCE RECORDS HAVE BEEN KEPT IN
MEDFORD (1911). MANY OTHER SITES AROUND THE AREA ALSO HAD THE DRIEST
CALENDAR YEAR AND THE COLDEST DECEMBER ON RECORD.

ALTHOUGH NO RAIN FELL AT MEDFORD, DURING THE SECOND HALF OF JULY
NUMEROUS LIGHTNING STRIKES AROUND THE AREA CAUSED FIRES THAT WERE HARD
TO CONTAIN. AS A RESULT, THE LATTER PART OF JULY AND ALL OF AUGUST SAW
SMOKY CONDITIONS IN THE ROGUE VALLEY. THE MUCH ABOVE NORMAL SEPTEMBER
RAINFALL FINALLY PUT AN END TO THESE CONDITIONS.

THE FIRST TWO DAYS OF DECEMBER WERE MILD; THEN AN ARCTIC FRONT BROUGHT
SNOW AND RECORD BREAKING LOW TEMPERATURES TO MOST OF SOUTHERN OREGON.
THE MONTH TURNED OUT TO BE THE COLDEST ON RECORD AT THE MEDFORD AIRPORT
WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 31.3 DEGREES. THIS BROKE THE OLD RECORD
OF 31.5 IN 1972.

THE HIGHEST PRESSURE RECORDED DURING THE YEAR WAS 30.67 INCHES OF MERCURY
ON JANUARY 16TH. THE LOWEST PRESSURE WAS 29.53 INCHES ON MARCH 6TH.
