WHILE THE FIRST FOUR MONTHS OF 2015 WERE BELOW NORMAL AT THE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE IN GRAY, MAY TURNED THINGS AROUND IN
A HURRY. IT WAS THE WARMEST MAY IN THE SHORT 20-YEAR HISTORY OF
OBSERVATIONS. THE WARM WEATHER FIRST ARRIVED NEAR THE BEGINNING OF
THE MONTH WITH SEVERAL DAYS OF ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES. BY THE 7TH
THE TEMPERATURE SURPASSED 80 DEGREES FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR.
MORE SEASONABLE WEATHER RETURNED FOR THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH ALONG
WITH OCCASIONAL LIGHT RAIN. BUT THE WARMTH RETURNED FOR THE LAST
WEEK OF THE MONTH HELPING TO MAKE THIS THE WARMEST MAY ON RECORD.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 59.0 DEGREES WHICH WAS 4.1
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL AND THE WARMEST ON RECORD. THE PREVIOUS WARMEST
MAY WAS 2010 WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 58.8 DEGREES. THE
COOLEST MAY WAS 2005 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 49.4 DEGREES.

A TOTAL OF 2.07 INCHES OF RAIN FELL WHICH WAS 1.83 INCHES BELOW
NORMAL. THE HEAVIEST RAIN FELL ON THE LAST DAY OF THE MONTH WHEN
0.62 INCHES WAS OBSERVED ON THE 31ST. THE WETTEST MAY WAS 2006 WHEN
8.54 INCHES FELL. THE DRIEST WAS 2001 WHEN ONLY 1.17 INCHES WAS
MEASURED.

NO SNOW FELL DURING MAY BUT HAIL WAS OBSERVED ON THE 26TH AND IS
RECORDED AS A TRACE OF FROZEN PRECIPITATION. SINCE OBSERVATIONS
BEGAN AT THE WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE IN GRAY 20 YEARS AGO THERE HAS
YET TO BE MEASURABLE SNOWFALL IN THE MONTH OF MAY.
