FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR NW OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
252 PM PDT TUE AUG 26 2014

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...HOT AND DRY CONDITIONS PERSIST
TODAY...WITH MID LEVEL HAINES 6 CONDITIONS OVER SOUTHERN PORTIONS
OF THE FORECAST AREA WHERE A SURFACE THERMAL TROUGH SITS. LOWER
PRESSURE WILL SET UP EAST OF THE CASCADES WEDNESDAY AND START THE
TRANSITION BACK TO ONSHORE FLOW. EXPECT A SLOW COOLING AND
MOISTENING TREND THROUGH THE SECOND HALF OF THE WEEK AS ONSHORE
FLOW INCREASES. AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH WILL BRING A MUCH COOLER AND
MOISTER AIR MASS FOR THE WEEKEND AND EARLY NEXT WEEK...ALONG WITH
THE POSSIBILITY OF PRECIPITATION.

.DISCUSSION...THE HOTTEST AND DRIEST DAY OF THE WEEK IS UNDERWAY
TODAY AS UPPER LEVEL HIGH PRESSURE CONTINUES TO BUILD INTO THE
PACIFIC NORTHWEST. A SURFACE THERMAL STARTED THE MORNING OVER THE
WILLAMETTE VALLEY AND HAS NOW PUSHED EAST DIRECTLY OVER THE
CASCADES. THIS IS LEADING TO MID LEVEL HAINES 6 CONDITIONS OVER
SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE FORECAST AREA. THE SURFACE TROUGH WILL
PUSH EAST OF THE CASCADES TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY...STARTING THE
TRANSITION BACK TO ONSHORE FLOW. THE ONSHORE FLOW IS EXPECTED TO
BE QUITE WEAK WEDNESDAY...SO IT MAY END UP BEING NEARLY AS WARM
AND DRY IN MANY PLACES AS WE SAW TODAY WITH THE UPPER LEVEL RIDGE
AXIS PUSHING DIRECTLY OVER THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. BUT EXPECT A
COOLING AND MOISTENING TREND THURSDAY AND FRIDAY AS A WEAK UPPER
LEVEL SHORTWAVE TROUGH STRENGTHENS THE ONSHORE FLOW. A SIGNIFICANT
PATTERN CHANCE IS FORECASTED OVER THE WEEKEND...AS A BROAD UPPER
LEVEL RIDGE MOVES INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. THIS SYSTEM SHOULD
BRING A SIGNIFICANTLY COOLER AIR MASS...ALONG WITH THE POSSIBILITY
FOR PRECIPITATION ACROSS MOST OF SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND
NORTHWEST OREGON. COOLER CONDITIONS LOOK TO PERSIST INTO EARLY
NEXT WEEK. PYLE
