Fire Weather Planning Forecast for NW Oregon and SW Washington
National Weather Service Portland OR
230 PM PDT Sun Jul 23 2017

...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM MONDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH
MONDAY EVENING FOR MUCH OF THE WILLAMETTE NF...
...THUNDERSTORM THREAT CONTINUES FOR MUCH OF THE OREGON CASCADES
TUESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...An unstable air mass will persist over the
region late this afternoon through Wednesday morning for a threat of
thunderstorms. The primary threat area will be in the Cascades south
of Mt. Jefferson. A return to stable and seasonal conditions begins
Wednesday afternoon and continues through at least Saturday.

.DISCUSSION...Thunderstorm potential will be the primary concern
late this afternoon through the evening, but more so Monday and
Tuesday afternoons and evenings. An upper low is forecast to be
centered along the North California coast Monday afternoon.
Increasing mid-level moisture Monday due to south flow aloft will
increase the thunderstorm threat for the Cascades, generally south
of Mt. Jefferson. There is the possibility of LAL 3 coverage in much
of the Willamette NF Monday afternoon through late-evening, which
has prompted the issuance of a Fire Weather Watch. The low drifts
north to northeast Tuesday and Tuesday night, which will spread the
thunderstorm threat a little more north. There is also the
possibility of nocturnal thunderstorms Tuesday night. A Fire Weather
Watch may be needed for portions of the Oregon Cascades Tuesday
afternoon through Tuesday night. Storms that develop over the next
couple of days will be slow moving. The main question is whether
storms will be wet or dry. The air mass is expected to gradually
moisten through time, for a better chance of wet storms. A gradual
cooling trend occurs during the latter half of the week. The latest
long range models have backed off on the possibility of a return to
hot conditions for the weekend and are maintaining temperate onshore
flow with seasonal temperatures.
