THE MILD WEATHER AT THE END OF JANUARY CONTINUED THROUGH THE FIRST
PART OF FEBRUARY. BY THE SECOND WEEK OF THE MONTH THE WEATHER BEGAN
TO CHANGE. A SNOWSTORM ON FEBRUARY 7 BROUGHT 4 INCHES OF SNOW, BUT
WAS JUST THE START OF A NEW COLD AND SNOWY WEATHER PATTERN. SNOW WAS
OBSERVED ON 9 OUT OF 10 DAYS FROM THE 7TH THROUGH THE 16TH. THE
HEAVIEST SNOW CAME FROM THE 9TH THROUGH THE 13TH WHEN 4 OUT OF 5
DAYS RECEIVED AT LEAST 6 INCHES OF SNOW ALONG WITH SOME VERY COLD
TEMPERATURES. DURING THE ENTIRE 10-DAY PERIOD PORTLAND RECEIVED MORE
THAN 39 INCHES OF SNOWFALL, ENOUGH TO ENSURE 2017 WAS ONE OF THE
SNOWIEST FEBRUARYS ON RECORD. ONCE THIS COLD AND SNOWY STRETCH OF
WEATHER WAS OVER, THE WEATHER PATTERN BEGAN TO CHANGE AGAIN. THE
TEMPERATURE TOPPED 40 DEGREES FOR 10 OF THE LAST 11 DAYS OF THE
MONTH INCLUDING 5 DAYS OVER 50 DEGREES. THIS PROLONGED PERIOD OF
WARM WEATHER WAS ENOUGH TO MELT MOST OF THE MID FEBRUARY SNOWFALL,
WITH ONLY 1 INCH OF SNOW LEFT ON THE GROUND AT THE END OF THE MONTH.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 28.7 DEGREES WHICH WAS 3.2
ABOVE NORMAL. THE WARMEST FEBRUARY WAS IN 1981 WHEN THE AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE WAS 32.2 DEGREES. THE COLDEST WAS 13.8 DEGREES IN 2015.

A TOTAL OF 4.55 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL WHICH WAS 1.30 INCHES
ABOVE NORMAL AND THE WETTEST FEBRUARY SINCE 2013. THE HEAVIEST
PRECIPITATION FELL DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH WHEN PORTLAND
ENDURED A VERY SNOWY STRETCH OF WEATHER. MORE THAN 1.5 INCHES OF
PRECIPITATION WAS MEASURED ON THE 12TH AND 13TH. THE WETTEST
FEBRUARY WAS IN 1900 WHEN 9.25 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL. THE
DRIEST WAS IN 1987 WITH ONLY 0.04 INCHES.

THERE WAS 39.7 INCHES OF SNOWFALL WHICH WAS 27.6 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL
AND THE 8TH SNOWIEST ON RECORD. THREE QUARTERS OF THAT SNOW FELL IN
JUST A FEW DAYS TIME WHEN 29.6 INCHES WAS MEASURED FROM THE 9TH
THROUGH THE 13TH. THE SNOWIEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD WAS IN 1969 WHEN
61.2 INCHES WAS OBSERVED. THE LEAST SNOWY FEBRUARY WAS 1941 WITH
ONLY 0.3 INCHES. THE FOLLOWING TABLE LISTS THE TOP TEN SNOWIEST
