SYNOPSIS...

North and central Georgia has remained in a wet and active period
over the last two weeks, with prolonged periods of heavy rainfall.
As a result of these above normal rainfall amounts, significant
improvement in drought conditions have occurred. Large portions of
north and central Georgia saw a one-category improvement over the
last week, and a two or three-category improvement since the
beginning of the month.

The majority of the rainfall occurred over the six days as multiple
disturbances and upper level systems produced waves of heavy
precipitation over the state. These waves of precipitation were
often only separated by a day or less, keeping soils moist and daily
rainfall totals high. The shorter term (90 day) and longer term (365
day) rainfall deficits at climate sites are minimal, with percent of
normal values largely 80 to 100 percent of normal and 90 to 150
percent of normal, respectively, for those time periods. If the
state remains in an active weather pattern into the summer months,
drought conditions may end over much of the area.

SUMMARY OF IMPACTS...

SOIL MOISTURE CONDITIONS.
Due to recent rainfall, conditions in the shallow soil profile are
Abnormally Moist to Wet across north Georgia, and neutral elsewhere.
The deeper soil profile still highlights the long term moderate to
severe drought conditions over portions of north Georgia, and the
developing moderate drought conditions over central Georgia. These
analyses do not fully encapsulate the rainfall over the last 48-
hours and may not be representative of the soil conditions as
they stand today.

Overall, the long-term drought has improved to include portions of
three counties in the Severe Drought category: Dawson, Lumpkin and
White. Extreme Drought conditions have ended over north and central
Georgia.

The headwaters of the Chattahoochee Basin, upstream of Lake Lanier,
remains in a Moderate Drought. Portions of east central Georgia also
remain in a Moderate Drought , generally within a line from Forsyth,
to Milledgeville, to Louisville, to Swainsboro, to Eastman, to Macon.

Elsewhere across the state, drought conditions have ended,
or have improved to the Abnormally Dry category.

RIVER AND STREAM FLOW CONDITIONS.
Average stream flows and ground water tables for the last 14-days
are near normal, although many groundwater sites remain below to
much below normal. Following the persistent rainfall this week,
normal to much above normal stream flow conditions were occurring
across north and central Georgia. Please note that creeks and
smaller rivers can change quickly due to runoff from heavy rain if
it occurs.

FIRE DANGER HAZARDS.
The latest fire danger assessment indicates a moderate risk across
the majority of north and central Georgia, north of a line from
Columbus, to Macon, to Washington. There is a high to very high risk
south of this line, extending into south Georgia. Please note that
this assessment can change rapidly due to changes in moisture levels
and rainfall received.

CLIMATE SUMMARY...

Over the last two weeks, 1 to 8 inches of rainfall occurred over
north and central Georgia. In general, 4 to 8 inches of rainfall
were common across the area, particularly in the upper Chattahoochee
Basin, and across large portions of middle Georgia, which were 200
to 600 percent of normal, and 300 to 700 percent of normal,
respectively.

Outside of these two regions, rainfall amounts varied from 1 to 3
inches, with the lowest rainfall amounts occurring over the south
Atlanta metro area in the headwaters of the Flint River Basin, and
along portions of the Interstate 20 Corridor in eastern Georgia. For
these areas, the 1 to 3 inch rainfall totals were generally 100 to
200 percent of normal.

Given that the state is still being impacted by both long term and
short term drought conditions, two tables have been provided below.
The first table indicates the the total rainfall and departures for
the last 365 days (long term drought), while the second is for the
last 90 days (short term drought).

HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK...

Current lake levels at several USACE Projects were below summer pool
levels, ranging between 6.5 and 7.0 feet below summer pool at
Hartwell, Lanier and Thurmond. These pool elevations have increased
nearly a foot over the last 14 days. The other USACE project
elevations ranged from at summer pool to 1.0 foot above summer pool.

After an initial rise this week with the recent rainfall, the pool
levels are projected to remain near steady or slightly decrease for
the next four weeks.

Summer pool level are considered the target elevation through the
summer and into the fall months, and the elevation departure will be
relative to the summer pool level until further notice.

PRECIPITATION/TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK...

For the rest of May...the outlook for north and central Georgia is
for normal temperatures for the majority of the state, with above
normal temperatures for central Georgia. There is above normal
precipitation expected. For June...the outlook is for above normal
temperatures and equal chances of above or below normal
precipitation.

90 Day Outlook...for June through August...continued above normal
temperatures and equal chances of above or below normal
precipitation are expected.

The next Drought Information Statement is scheduled for Thursday,
June 8, 2017.
