HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL DISCUSSION

...FLOOD POTENTIAL...

A FLOOD WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR FORT YUKON ON THE PORCUPINE RIVER.
A FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR THE REST OF PORCUPINE RIVER...UP TO
THE CANADIAN BORDER. VERY WARM TEMPERATURES HAVE DRAMATICALLY
INCREASED SNOW MELT...RESULTING IN BANKFULL OR OVER BANKFULL
CONDITIONS.

YUKON RIVER... HIGH WATER CONTINUES FOR ALAKANUK AND EMMONAK...BUT
LEVELS ARE DROPPING. THE REST OF THE YUKON RIVER IS OPEN.

WATER IS FLOWING OVER PORTIONS OF THE DALTON HIGHWAY BETWEEN
MILEPOSTS 394 AND THE DEADHORSE AIRPORT. A FLOOD WARNING HAS BEEN
ISSUED FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS... WITH TEMPERATURES EXPECTED TO
CONTINUE TO BE VERY WARM AND WELL ABOVE NORMAL.

ON THE NOATAK RIVER A FLOOD ADVISORY HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR MINOR
FLOODING OF THE LOW LYING AREAS DOWNSTREAM OF NOATAK. A PILOT
REPORTED THE RIVER OUT OF ITS BANKS BEGINNING ABOUT A MILE UPSTREAM
OF THE MOUTH.

THE FLOOD WATCH ISSUED FOR COLLVILLE AND THE KUPARUK RIVER WILL BE
UPGRADED TO AN ADVISORY FOR MINOR FLOODING. THE OBSERVER AT COLVILLE
RIVER REPORTS THAT WATER HAS RISEN TO MINOR FLOOD STAGE. MEANWHILE
THE KUPARKUK RIVER HAS BEGUN TO FLOW OVER LOW WATER CROSSINGS.

PLEASE NOTE THAT EVEN THOUGH A RIVER REACH MAY BE LABELED OPEN OR
MOSTLY OPEN... IT IS STILL POSSIBLE FOR ICE RUNS FROM UPSTREAM TO
PASS THROUGH THESE REACHES AND MAKE TRAVEL UNSAFE.

THE UPPER LEVEL PATTERN STILL HAS A RIDGE OVER EASTERN ALASKA AND
WESTERN CANADA... WITH A TROUGH THAT EXTENDS FROM EXTREME EASTERN
RUSSIAN DOWN THROUGH THE BERING AND INTO THE EASTER PACIFIC. IN THE
NEAR TERM... THE NORTHERN PIECE OF THIS TROUGH PASSES THROUGH THE
NORTHWEST MAINLAND CREATING SCATTERED SHOWERS AND SHIFTING THE RIDGE
AXIS SLIGHTLY WEST. AREAS OF LIGHT PRECIPITATION CAN BE EXPECTED
OVER WESTERN ALASKA AND THE AKPEN ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE INTO
FRIDAY.

THE 6 TO 10 DAY TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK HAS INCREASED CHANCES OF ABOVE
NORMAL TEMPERATURES OVER THE ENTIRE STATE.

THE 6 TO 10 DAY PRECIPITATION OUTLOOK HAS INCREASED CHANCES FOR BELOW NORMAL
PRECIPITATION OVER MOST OF SOUTHEASTERN MAINLAND AND THE PANHANDLE
OF ALASKA.
