...DANGEROUS SNEAKER WAVES POSSIBLE AT THE BEACHES TODAY...

ELEVATED SURF WITH BREAKER HEIGHTS OF 17 TO 19 FT AND DANGEROUS
SNEAKER WAVES ARE EXPECTED TODAY. THIS WILL PRESENT A SIGNIFICANT
HAZARD TO BEACH GOERS ALONG THE SOUTHERN OREGON COAST TODAY.

WESTERLY SWELL WILL PEAK AT 13 TO 15 FEET LATE THIS MORNING AND
THIS AFTERNOON AND WILL REMAIN ELEVATED THROUGH THIS EVENING.
THE LONG PERIOD OF THIS SWELL, AROUND 15 SECONDS, WILL RESULT IN
BREAKER HEIGHTS UP TO 19 FEET. DANGEROUS SNEAKER WAVES ARE
POSSIBLE THIS MORNING THROUGH THIS EVENING.

SNEAKER WAVES ARE SUDDEN AND UNEXPECTED WAVES THAT REACH MUCH
FURTHER UP THE BEACH THAN NORMAL. THEY CAN TAKE BEACH GOERS BY
SURPRISE AND SWEEP THEM OUT TO SEA. THESE WAVES CAN ALSO QUICKLY
PUSH LARGE OBJECTS, SUCH AS LOGS, UP THE BEACH, CREATING A
SIGNIFICANT HAZARD. THE DANGER OF SNEAKER WAVES IS MAGNIFIED
BECAUSE THE WEATHER WILL NOT BE STORMY, AND A FALSE PERCEPTION MAY
EXIST THAT BEACH CONDITIONS ARE SAFE.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING ACTIVITY ON THE SOUTH OREGON BEACHES TODAY,
STAY ALERT TO THE DANGER OF SNEAKER WAVES. NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON
THE OCEAN. WEARING LIFE PRESERVERS IS GOOD SAFETY MEASURE,
ESPECIALLY FOR CHILDREN. MAINTAIN A GOOD DISTANCE FROM THE SURF
AND KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE SEA.
