...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1935, the first in a series of three dust storms rolled over Wichita
County, Kansas. Winds blew from different directions during the
three days which piled dirt all over the county. Two freight trains
and one passenger train were marooned in Leoti. Schools were
closed and all civic functions were postponed. Breathing was
extremely difficult.

In 1999, a strong area of low pressure across the central US in
combination with high pressure across the Rockies brought high
winds to Northwest Kansas for a three day period. These strong
winds caused damage to a couple of schools, a local Post
Office, several power line poles to be severed, and numerous
houses had their shingles torn off. Goodland Weather Office had a
peak wind speed of 71 mph on the 8th with many other locations
receiving similar peak wind speeds during the event.
