...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1935, one of worst dust storms in Wichita County, Kansas, began.
The storm struck around 5 PM in the afternoon. As the dirt blew, a
sudden darkness fell on the county. Everyone remained indoors
until 11 PM when winds relaxed enough to allow dust to settle.

In 1957, a three day blizzard began across the Tri State area.
Snow drifted to 10 to 25 feet. Thirty to fifty mph winds blew for
three days, and a Union Pacific passenger train was stranded near
Winona Kansas. It was three days before helicopters were able to
evacuate the trapped passengers. Fuel and feed were also dropped to
many isolated farm houses and hungry cattle, but
overall, livestock loss was reported light.
