Fire Weather Planning Forecast for NW Oregon and SW Washington
National Weather Service Portland OR
253 PM PDT Mon Aug 21 2017

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...A thermal trough over the Willamette
Valley today, bringing breezy easterly flow to the Cascades and
foothills. The thermal trough will move east of the Cascades
tonight. This will bring a return to breezy onshore flow through
the rest of the week. A weak front will bring a slight chance of
showers Thursday. Hot and dry weather returns next weekend.

.DISCUSSION...Upper level high pressure is centered directly over
the region today, bringing much warmer and drier conditions than
we have seen over the past several days. There is also a surface
thermal trough over the Willamette Valley, which is bringing
easterly flow in the Cascades and foothills, and the Columbia
River Gorge. The easterly winds have been breezy on some of the
mountain ridgetops. The upper level ridge axis and the surface
thermal trough are modeled to move east of the Cascades tonight.
This will result in a return to the breezy onshore pattern that we
have been in for most of the past week. Tomorrow will be a few
degrees cooler than today, but still on the warmer side. Then more
significant cooling is expected Wednesday and especially Thursday
as an upper level trough from the Gulf of Alaska drops down into
the Pac NW. A weak front will move onshore late Wednesday night
and Thursday, which will bring much more cloud cover and a chance
for light rain across the region. If rain does occur, amounts are
expected to be very light. Upper level ridging begins to build
back toward the region Friday as the trough departs to the east.
Confidence is increasing that another period of hot and dry
weather will occur over the weekend and potentially into early
next week. Pyle
