...NWS STORM SURVEY FOR 01/04/15 TORNADO AND THUNDERSTORM WIND EVENTS...
...UPDATED FOR TORNADOES IN PULASKI AND DODGE COUNTIES...

A STRONG LINE OF STORMS MOVED THROUGH NORTH AND CENTRAL GEORGIA
DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS SUNDAY. STRONG WINDS ALONG AND
AHEAD OF THE LINE CAUSED DAMAGE ACROSS NORTH GEORGIA INCLUDING
DAMAGE TO SEVERAL HOMES NORTHEAST OF NORTH DRUID HILLS NEAR THE
INTERSTATE 85 AND 285 INTERCHANGE.

THREE WEAK TORNADOES IN PULASKI AND DODGE COUNTIES ALSO DOWNED
NUMEROUS TREES AND DAMAGED ONE BARN AROUND MIDDAY SUNDAY.

.WIND DAMAGE IN NORTHEAST DEKALB COUNTY...

PEAK WIND ESTIMATED : 85 MPH
DAMAGE SWATH WIDTH /MAXIMUM/: 450 YARDS
FATALITIES: 0
INJURIES: 0

START DATE: 01/04/2015
START TIME: 535 AM EST
START LOCATION: 3.5 MILES NORTHEAST OF NORTH DRUID HILLS

SUMMARY:
A NWS SURVEY TEAM UTILIZED BOTH RADAR AND GROUND OBSERVATIONS TO
CONCLUDE THAT THE DAMAGE WAS THE RESULT OF STRAIGHT LINE WINDS OR
DOWNBURST ASSOCIATED WITH THE SQUALL LINE SUNDAY MORNING. DAMAGE
WAS FIRST NOTED TO TREES ALONG SHALLOWFORD ROAD NEAR NORTH FORK
PEACHTREE CREEK. TREES DOWNED FACING EAST WERE NOTED ALONG COSMOS
DRIVE NE WITH SOME DAMAGE TO HOMES DUE TO FALLING LIMBS. A LARGE
TREE WAS DOWNED FACING NORTH ON A HOME ON HAWTHORNE DRIVE WITH
OTHERS DOWNED SURROUNDING THE HOME. OTHER TREES WERE DOWNED ALONG
JASMINE COURT AND CANNA RIDGE CIRCLE AS WELL WITH A NORTHEAST AND
NORTH PATTERN RESPECTIVELY. MORE EXTENSIVE TREE AND HOME DAMAGE
WAS NOTED ALONG BRAITHWOOD ROAD AND APPLEWOOD COURT WHERE NUMEROUS
TREES WERE DOWNED IN A NORTHERLY AND NORTHWESTERLY DIRECTION...
SEVERAL LANDING ON HOMES. ALL OF THE HOME DAMAGE WAS DUE TO
FALLING TREES AND LIMBS. UPON CLOSE INSPECTION OF THE TERRAIN
MAPPED TO THE DAMAGE...IT DOES APPEAR THAT TERRAIN DIFFERENCES IN
THE AREA PLAYED A ROLE IN THE DIRECTION OF THE TREES FALLING WITH
THE STORM AS THE SURFACE WINDS WERE IMPACTED BY THE SLIGHT ELEVATION
DIFFERENCES IN THE AREA. STRONG WINDS OFF THE SURFACE FEEDING INTO
THE SQUALL LINE WERE LIKELY BROUGHT TO THE SURFACE IN THIS
LOCATION CAUSING THE DAMAGE.
