...Update to November 27 Tornado Damage Survey...

Updated Friday, December 2, 2016

There were minor changes to the damage paths for the tornadoes
near Red Cloud and near Lawrence Nebraska.

The starting time of the Red Cloud tornado was moved to 4:32 pm
and the path extended back southwest about 1.5 miles, basically
beginning on Highway 136. Neither the tornado rating nor maximum
wind speed changed.

Regarding the tornado near Lawrence, the path of the tornado
was extended a bit further per further damage investigation on
December 1. This pushed the end time of the tornado back a couple
minutes. This did not change the tornado rating nor the estimated
maximum wind speed.

In both cases, video evidence and correlation with radar
times were important factors in helping to determine start
and end times. In the case of the tornadoes east of Lawrence,
the path extension was also verified with additional damage,
albeit very limited damage in nature.

Thanks again to everyone who helped with the survey information.

...Three tornadoes in south central Nebraska on Sunday...

Three (3) tornadoes were confirmed to have occurred on Sunday,
November 27, 2016 via a National Weather Service damage survey
and several reports.

Near Upland...a combination of reports and a search for damage
were used to determine a short, roughly one minute long tornado
occurred. This tornado was rated EF-0 with a peak wind at 70 mph.

East of Red Cloud...an EF-1 rated tornado uprooted trees,
destroyed an outbuilding, upset two irrigation pivots and
caused other minor damage on its 3.9 mile path. Peak winds were
estimated at 95 mph.

East of Lawrence...a brief EF-0 rated tornado caused very minor
damage on its short path through rural areas. Peak winds
were estimated at 75 mph with this tornado. This tornado had
a 3.76 mile path.

Regarding the thunderstorm which produced the tornadoes near
Lawrence and Red Cloud, it is certainly possible there may have
been other brief touchdowns between the two confirmed tornadoes.
However, no other damage was found nor has been reported at this
point. There were reports noting the bouncy and up and down nature
of The tornadic circulation portion of the thunderstorm as it
moved northeast.

NWS Hastings would like to thank the spotters, law enforcement,
storm chasers and general public for all the reports and comments
about the storms on Sunday. The pictures and videos are greatly
appreciated and helpful in determining tornado damage and path
implications.
