...MISSISSIPPI RIVER AND ILLINOIS RIVER ICE STATEMENT...

ICE COVER CONDITIONS AS OF 02/13/18
*******************************************************************
MISSISSIPPI RIVER
ICE CONTINUED TO DEVELOP AND THICKEN SINCE LAST WEEK WITH WELL BELOW
NORMAL AIR TEMPERATURES. AIR TEMPERATURES WERE 10 TO 20 DEGREES BELOW
NORMAL IN THE NORTH OVER THE PAST WEEK. WE SHOULD PICK UP SOME MORE
ICE IN THE NORTH THROUGH NEXT WEEK WITH ABOUT AVERAGE AIR
TEMPERATURES, WHILE WE WILL LIKELY MELT SOME ICE IN THE SOUTH WITH
GENERALLY ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES.

DAM 1 TO LD10 WITH COVERAGES OF 80 TO 100 PERCENT AND THICKNESSES
OF 9 TO 15 INCHES. LD14 TO LD27 REPORTED 50 TO 100 PERCENT ICE
COVERAGE WITH THICKNESSES OF 1 TO 6 INCHES. THE WEBCAM AT ST LOUIS
SHOWED OPEN WATER THIS MORNING WHILE THE WEBCAM AT HERMANN MISSOURI
SHOWED PANCAKE ICE MOVING THROUGH. WEBCAMS AROUND ROCK ISLAND THIS
MORNING SHOWED SOME OPEN WATER AND SOME ICE. VIIRS SATELLITE IMAGERY
FROM SUNDAY SHOWED COMPLETE ICE COVERAGE FROM BRAINERD, MINNESOTA
DOWNSTREAM TO LOCK AND DAM 19. CLOUDS OBSCURED THE VIEW DOWNSTREAM
OF LD19.

ILLINOIS RIVER SYSTEM (CHICAGO/ILLINOIS R)

CURRENT CONDITIONS AS OF 02/13/2018:
SEE THE COMMENTS ABOVE FOR DETAILS.

OUTLOOK FOR NEXT 7 DAYS:
THE ROLLER COASTER OF AIR TEMPERATURES WILL CONTINUE THROUGH NEXT
WEEK BUT SHOULD AVERAGE ABOUT NORMAL IN THE NORTH. IN THE SOUTH,
TEMPERATURES WILL BE MOSTLY ABOVE NORMAL THROUGH NEXT WEEK.

IN THE NORTH...HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE MOSTLY IN THE 20S AND 30S
WITH LOWS RANGING FROM THE SINGLE DIGITS TO THE 20S. HIGHS COULD
REACH THE LOW 40S ON WEDNESDAY AS FAR NORTH AS ST CLOUD.

IN THE SOUTH...HIGHS WILL BE MOSTLY ABOVE FREEZING WITH ST LOUIS
POSSIBLY REACHING THE UPPER 60S ON THURSDAY. LOWS WILL RANGE FROM
THE 20S TO THE 40S AND 50S.

IN OUR REGION...LOW TEMPERATURES THIS MORNING WERE -2 DEGREES
IN ST CLOUD, 5 DEGREE IN THE TWIN CITIES, 4 DEGREES IN
DUBUQUE, 2 DEGREES IN MOLINE, 3 DEGREES AT LD19, 12
DEGREES IN PEORIA, AND 21 DEGREES IN ST LOUIS.

BASED ON THESE FACTORS...ICE SHOULD CONTINUE TO SLOWLY FORM AND
THICKEN IN THE NORTH THROUGH NEXT WEEK. LITTLE CHANGE IN ICE
CONDITIONS IS EXPECTED ROUGHLY FROM LD12 TO LD19 WHILE LOTS OF
ICE SHOULD MELT DOWNSTREAM OF ABOUT LD19. THE RISK OF BREAK-UP
JAMS IS ELEVATED IN THE SOUTHERN HALF THROUGH NEXT WEEK, DUE TO
WARM TEMPERATURES AND ANTICIPATED INCREASED STREAMFLOW.

THE NEXT ICE STATEMENT WILL BE RELEASED ON TUESDAY..
FEB 20 2018.
