In 1930, a violent F4 tornado struck Barton and Rice
counties. Passing along the south side of Ellinwood, the
tornado tracked 27 miles from 8 miles southwest of
Ellinwood to 10 miles north of Chase. Around 440 yards
wide, the twister injured 3 and caused around $300,000
damage. Among the damage were 46 box cars, large
sections of which were thrown one half mile. This was
but one of 22 strong and violent tornadoes that broke out
from Oklahoma to Nebraska. All 5 violent twisters were
F4s. Two struck Oklahoma and 2 in Nebraska. In extreme
southwest Oklahoma, an F4 reached nearly 0.6 mile wide
along a 7-mile track through Cotton County. The massive
twister killed 1, injured 16, and caused around $105,000
damage; about half of which was to oil rigs. The second
F4 struck South-Central Oklahoma 7 miles northeast of
Rush Springs where 2 were killed and 9 were injured along
a track only 4 miles long but had reached 400 yards wide.
Two well-built homes were swept from their foundations.
The two Nebraska F4s struck near Hastings and Greeley
where farms were severely damaged. In Greeley County,
one farm vanished and on 2 others the houses were
leveled. Fortunately, there were no deaths but 5 were
injured.
