Hydrologic Outlook
National Weather Service Chicago IL
1131 AM CDT Mon Apr 1 2024

...Additional waves of rainfall may lead to flooding across portions
of northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana...

Isolated flooding of ditches, creeks, and poor drainage areas likely
across northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana, generally
near and south of I-80. Flash flooding of creeks, streams, roadways,
and poor drainage areas possible along and south of US-24.
Significant river rises and minor river flooding possible along the
Iroquois, Kankakee, and Illinois rivers.

A swath of heavy rainfall occurred along the I-80 corridor
overnight, with rainfall accumulations up to 2.5 inches. Elsewhere
in northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana, rainfall
accumulations up to 0.5 inches were widespread. Soil moisture is at
least slightly elevated across the area, with near saturated soil
moisture conditions likely extending from near I-80 southward to
near US-24. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop later
today, with multiple rounds of rainfall moving through northern and
central Illinois and northwestern Indiana occurring through tomorrow
night. Storm movement tomorrow favors the possibility of multiple
thunderstorms moving over the same general areas, which increases
the chance of heavy rainfall accumulations. Multiple swaths of
rainfall of 1-2 inches are possible, with isolated accumulations up
to 3 inches, especially south of US-24.

This outlook means that elevated water levels and potential impacts
are possible, but not yet certain. Persons should closely monitor
forecasts including the possibility of flood watches, warnings, and
advisories.

No additional Hydrologic Outlooks are expected for this event, but
other flood related products may be issued and/or updated over the
next few days as the threat evolves.
