Subject: Soliciting Comments on Experimental Spanish-Translated
Tropical Cyclone Products from the National Hurricane
Center (NHC) through November 30, 2024

Effective on or around May 15, 2024, the National Weather Service
(NWS)
will experimentally expand the number of Spanish-translated tropical
cyclone text products. The NWS will collect feedback on these
experimental products through November 30, 2024.

Currently, the NWS operationally issues Spanish-translated Tropical
Weather Outlook (TWO) and Tropical Cyclone Public Advisories (TCP)
for the
Atlantic basin. Beginning with the 2024 hurricane season, product
identifiers (also known as “headers”) will change to reflect that
the
issuing office will change from Weather Forecast Office San Juan to
the
National Hurricane Center (NHC). See Service Change Notice 24-26
linked
below for more information:

https://www.weather.gov/media/notification/pdf_2023_24/scn24-26_nhc-
issued-spanish_two-tcp.pdf

On or around May 15, 2024, NHC will also begin to experimentally
provide
Spanish translations for the following products:
 - TWOs for the eastern North Pacific basin
 - TCPs for the eastern North Pacific basin
 - Tropical Cyclone Discussions (TCDs) for the Atlantic and
   eastern North Pacific basins
 - Tropical Cyclone Updates (TCUs) for the Atlantic and
   eastern North Pacific basins

If comments are favorable, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center
(CPHC) and
Weather Prediction Center (WPC) will also plan to issue their
tropical
cyclone advisory products in Spanish using recently acquired product
headers.

These experimental products will be provided using the following
product
identifiers:

Spanish Product WMO ID AWIPS PIL
--------------- ------ ---------
TWO - Eastern PacificABPZ21 KNHC TWOSEP
TCP - Eastern Pacific (NHC)WTPZ/11-15/ KNHC TASEP/1-5/
TCD - Atlantic (NHC)WTNT/51-55/ KNHC TDSAT/1-5/
TCD - Eastern Pacific (NHC)WTPZ/51-55/ KNHC TDSEP/1-5/
TCU - AtlanticWTNT/71-75/ KNHC TUSAT/1-5/
TCU - Eastern PacificWTPZ/71-75/ KNHC TUSEP/1-5/

These changes are part of a larger effort to expand the number of
Spanish-
translated text products provided by the NWS. To do so, the NWS will
be
using translation technology and will not review every product prior
to
issuance. Each product will include the following disclaimer in
Spanish:

*** Este producto ha sido procesado automáticamente utilizando un
programa
de traducción y puede contener omisiones y errores. El Servicio
Nacional
de Meteorología no puede garantizar la precisión del texto
convertido. De
haber alguna duda, el texto en inglés es siempre la versión
autorizada.
