COASTAL HAZARD MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MOUNT HOLLY NJ
349 PM EDT WED AUG 31 2016

...DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS WITH ROUGH SURF CONDITIONS CONTINUE AT
THE NEW JERSEY AND DELAWARE BEACHES INTO THIS EVENING AND WILL
PROBABLY WORSEN OVER THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND...

.LINGERING SWELLS FROM THE EASTERN ATLANTIC DEPARTING HURRICANE
GASTON WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE A NOTICEABLE IMPACT ALONG OUR SHORES
THROUGH THIS EVENING. THE SWELL TEMPORARILY DECAYS THURSDAY AND
FRIDAY.

MEANWHILE...ATTENTION WILL TURN TO THE PROBABLE INTENSIFICATION
OF A TROPICAL SYSTEM NOW IN THE GULF OF MEXICO. ITS GENERAL PATH
SHOULD TAKE IT ALONG THE SOUTHEAST COAST OF UNITED STATES FRIDAY.
THEREAFTER...ITS EVENTUAL PROXIMITY AND STRENGTH IN THE OFFSHORE
WATERS WELL TO THE EAST OF THE MID ATLANTIC COAST THIS WEEKEND
WILL DETERMINE THE SEVERITY OF THE WESTWARD MOVING SWELLS.

ANYONE WITH PLANS FOR THE SHORE THIS LABOR DAY WEEKEND SHOULD
PREPARE FOR POSSIBLE BEACH CLOSURES OR RESTRICTIONS. THE HIGHEST
SWELLS...POSSIBLE 6 TO 8 FOOT BREAKERS...ARE OUTLOOKED TO ARRIVE
ALONG THE NEW JERSEY AND DELAWARE COASTS SUNDAY WITH ROUGH
CONDITIONS LINGERING LABOR DAY.

DELAWARE BEACHES-EASTERN MONMOUTH-ATLANTIC COASTAL CAPE MAY-
COASTAL ATLANTIC-COASTAL OCEAN-
349 PM EDT WED AUG 31 2016

...BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS
EVENING...

THE BREAKERS IN THE BEACH SWIMMING ZONE CAN KNOCK SWIMMERS AND
WADERS DOWN INTO THE SAND...CAUSING INJURY.

THE SWELLS WILL VERY SLOWLY DECAY LATE TODAY INTO FRIDAY. THAT
MAY MEAN A SOMEWHAT LOWER RISK FOR THE FORMATION OF DANGEROUS RIP
CURRENTS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. STILL...IT IS STRONGLY ADVISED TO
SWIM ONLY IN DESIGNATED AREAS WATCHED BY LIFEGUARDS. SWIMMING
AFTER THE LIFEGUARDS GO HOME OR WHERE LIFEGUARDS DO NOT HAVE YOU
IN SIGHT RAISES THE RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH DUE TO RIP CURRENTS.
SOME BEACHES HOWEVER MAY NO LONGER HAVE LIFEGUARDS ON DUTY NOW
THAT IT IS LATE IN THE SEASON.

OUTLOOK FOR THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND...SWELLS ARE LIKELY TO BUILD
EVEN HIGHER THAN WHAT HAS OCCURRED THE PAST COUPLE OF DAYS.
BREAKERS AROUND 6 FEET OR A BIT HIGHER ARE POSSIBLE BY SUNDAY
ALONG WITH ABOVE NORMAL TIDES. RIP CURRENT DANGER AND WAVE
RELATED INJURY RISK WILL PROBABLY BE WORSE THAN WHAT WE`VE
EXPERIENCED SO FAR THIS WEEK.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT IS ISSUED WHEN THREATS SUCH AS RIP
CURRENTS...LONGSHORE CURRENTS...SNEAKER WAVES AND OTHER HAZARDS
CREATE LIFE-THREATENING CONDITIONS IN THE SURF ZONE. CAUTION
SHOULD BE USED WHEN IN OR NEAR THE WATER.
