MONTHLY WEATHER RECAPS...

JANUARY...FAIRLY ACTIVE WEATHER DURING THE FIRST HALF OF JANUARY.
RAIN WAS RECORDED DURING A STRETCH OF 17 DAYS FROM JAN 2ND THROUGH
18TH, BUT THE MONTH STILL ENDED BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION. STRONG
EAST WINDS ON JAN 4TH. A POTENT FRONT AND LOW PRESSURE ON JAN 8-9TH.
THE LATTER HALF OF THE MONTH WAS RATHER DRY. BELOW NORMAL
TEMPERATURES DURING LAST 3 DAYS OF THE MONTH WITH BELOW FREEZING
LOWS. OVERALL, ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES IN JANUARY.

FEBRUARY...WHILE THE MONTH STARTED ON A MILD NOTE, PRECIPITATION WAS
DOWN A BIT. HIGH PRESSURE KEPT MOST OF THE STRONGER FRONTS OFFSHORE.
WEATHER PATTERN BEGAN SHIFTING AROUND MID-MONTH, WITH A TRANSITION
TO MORE NORTHERLY FLOW ALOFT. THIS BROUGHT SLIGHT COOLING AND DRIER
AIR, WITH LOWER SNOW LEVELS. ON THE 22ND, A CRIPPLING SNOWSTORM
IMPACTED THE PORTLAND AND VANCOUVER METRO AREA. THE STORM BROUGHT
WIDESPREAD 6 TO 12 INCHES OF SNOWFALL TO THE AREA. THIS RESULTED IN
SNARLED TRAFFIC AND NUMEROUS TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS. THEN, ABNORMALLY
COLD WEATHER SETTLED IN, WITH A HIGH OF ONLY 31 DEG ON THE 23RD AND
A LOW OF 18 DEG ON THE 25TH. EAST WINDS GUSTING TO 35 TO 45 MPH
BROUGHT THE WIND CHILL DOWN TO NEAR 10 DEG AT TIMES. A COOL SHOWERY
PATTERN CLOSED THE MONTH.

MARCH...OVERALL, MARCH WAS COOLER THAN NORMAL, WITH PLENTY OF CLOUDS
AND PRECIPITATION. THE LATE FEBRUARY ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN CARRIED
ON INTO EARLY MARCH. MANY OF THE DAYS SAW SHOWERS MIXED WITH SMALL
HAIL AT TIMES. A PACIFIC FRONT PUSHED INLAND ON THE 13TH, BRINGING A
ROUND OF BREEZY SOUTH WINDS AND HEAVY RAIN TO THE REGION, INCLUDING
A DAILY RECORD RAINFALL OF 1.19 INCHES. AFTERWARDS, MILDER PACIFIC
AIR FILTERED INLAND, WITH A STRING OF MILD SPRING-LIKE DAYS FROM THE
14TH TO THE 19TH, WITH THE WARMEST DAY BEING ON THE 18TH. THE ACTIVE
WEATHER RESUMED, AS THE JET STREAM OFF THE NORTH PACIFIC PUSHED
FRONTS INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST.

APRIL...OVERALL, IT WAS A BIT WETTER AND COOLER THAN MOST APRILS.
THE MONTH CONTINUED TO SEE RATHER PROGRESSIVE WEATHER PATTERN,
MAINTAINING SHOWERY AND COOL CONDITIONS THROUGH THE 24TH. A STRONG
FRONT ON THE 10TH BROUGHT 1.06 INCHES OF RAIN SETTING A DAILY
RAINFALL RECORD. AT THE CLOSE OF THE MONTH, HIGH PRESSURE BROUGHT
MILDER AIR AND A WELCOME BREAK FROM THE CLOUDS AND PRECIPITATION.
TEMPERATURES JUMPED WELL ABOVE NORMAL AS OFFSHORE FLOW DEVELOPED
27TH THROUGH 29TH, INCLUDING A DAILY RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 88
DEGREES ON THE 28TH. TOTAL MONTHLY RAINFALL OF 5.08 INCHES WAS THE
4TH WETTEST APRIL ON RECORD.

MAY...AFTER A RATHER DANKISH AND DAMP SPRING, MAY BROUGHT MUCH
DELIGHT TO AREA GARDENERS, WITH WARM AND DRIER WEATHER. UPPER LOW
OVER THE REGION MAINTAINED COOL WEATHER FOR THE FIRST WEEK. THEN,
HIGH PRESSURE BUILT OVER THE PACIFIC NW BRINGING WARM AND DRY
CONDITIONS ALONG WITH OFFSHORE WINDS. FINISHED AS THE WARMEST MAY ON
RECORD, AS WELL AS THE 11TH DRIEST, REPORTING JUST 0.91 INCH OF
RAINFALL AT PDX. A STREAK OF 9 CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF HIGHS ABOVE 80
DEGREES BEGAN ON THE 12TH, WITH 5 OF THOSE DAYS RECORDING HIGHS IN
THE 90S. THIS INCLUDED THE WARMEST MOTHERS DAY ON RECORD ON THE 14TH
WITH A HIGH OF 92. THE DAYS BEFORE AND AFTER ALSO RECORDED RECORD
HIGHS, WITH 93 DEGREES ON THE 13TH BEING THE WARMEST.

JUNE...GENERALLY WAS A WARM JUNE, BUT NO RECORD HIGHS THIS YEAR. THE
DRY WEATHER OF MAY CONTINUED INTO JUNE. BUT, IN CONTRAST TO MAY, THE
FATHERS DAY HOLIDAY WAS ONE OF THE COOLEST AND DAMPEST ON RECORD. A
STRONG UPPER LOW ARRIVED ON THE 18TH, BRINGING SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS. ONE STRONG THUNDERSTORM PRODUCED UP TO PENNY-SIZED
HAIL AS IT TRACKED ACROSS SOUTHEAST PORTLAND. A WATERSPOUT WAS ALSO
OBSERVED OVER THE COLUMBIA RIVER NEAR CAMAS, WA. A DAILY RECORD
RAINFALL OF 0.98 INCH WAS ALSO RECORDED ON THE 18TH. THEN, STRONG
ONSHORE FLOW BROUGHT COOLISH DAYS, WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE 50S AND
60S FROM THE 17TH THROUGH 20TH. TEMPERATURES RAMPED BACK UP WITH
HIGHS IN 80S FROM THE 22ND THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH.

JULY...WARM AND DRY WEATHER CONTINUED. DRIZZLE ON THE 10TH AND
PASSING SPRINKLES ON THE 24TH WERE THE ONLY DROPS OF RAIN IN JULY
FOR PORTLAND. WHILE DRY JULYS ARE NOT ALL THAT UNCOMMON, JULY 2023
JOINS 2021, 2017, 2013, 2003, 1984, 1960, 1958, AND 1952 AS THE ONLY
OTHER MONTHS WITH A TRACE RECORDED (ONLY 1967 HAD 0 RAINFALL). THE
WARMEST DAY OF THE MONTH OCCURRED ON THE 5TH, WITH A DAILY RECORD
HIGH OF 98 DEG. THE HIGH OF 96 DEG ON INDEPENDENCE DAY WAS JUST ONE
DEGREE SHY OF THE RECORD 97 DEG SET IN 1972. JULY ENDED AS THE 5TH
WARMEST JULY.

AUGUST...WARM AND DRY AS HIGH PRESSURE DOMINATED. IN FACT, IT WAS
THE WARMEST AUGUST ON RECORD. MULTI-DAY STRETCH OF HIGHS EXCEEDING
100 DEGREES THE 13TH TO 16TH. HOTTEST DAY (14TH) WAS 108 DEGREES,
WHICH MADE IT THE WARMEST DAY ON RECORD FOR AUGUST AT THE PORTLAND
AIRPORT (PRIOR WAS 107 SET IN 1981). A MODESTLY STRONG FRONT ARRIVED
TO CLOSE THE MONTH, WITH COOLER TEMPERATURES AND OVER A HALF INCH OF
RAIN FOR THE METRO AREA.

SEPTEMBER...GENERALLY WARM AND DRY WEATHER THE FIRST HALF OF THE
MONTH, EXCEPT 3RD TO 5TH WHEN ONSHORE FLOW PUSHED MARINE STRATUS
INLAND. HIGHS GENERALLY 80 TO 90 THE 6TH TO 16TH, THEN MORE
SEASONABLE WEATHER, BUT MOSTLY DRY. COOLER AND WET THE LAST WEEK OF
THE MONTH AS A SERIES OF FRONTAL SYSTEMS MOVED ACROSS THE REGION.
HIGHS IN THE 60S THE 24TH TO 30TH WITH RAIN NEARLY EVERY DAY.

OCTOBER...SEASONABLE WEATHER TO START THE MONTH, ALONG WITH A FRONT
THAT MOVED THROUGH ON THE 2ND. THEN, UNSEASONABLY WARM AND DRY THE
5TH TO 8TH WITH HIGHS IN THE 80S. AFTER THAT, A MORE TYPICAL FALL
WEATHER PATTERN ARRIVED. OCCASIONAL FRONTS BROUGHT RAIN AND
GRADUALLY COOLER TEMPERATURES TO THE REGION. THE WETTEST DAY
OCCURRED THE 16TH, RECORDING A DAILY RECORD RAINFALL OF 0.79 INCH.
HIGH PRESSURE AT THE END OF THE MONTH BROUGHT DRY WEATHER AND MILD
DAYS, ALONG WITH COOL NIGHTS. CHILLY MORNINGS TO CLOSE OUT THE MONTH
WITH LOWS IN THE 30S. TOTAL RAINFALL OF 2.49 INCHES FINISHED NEARLY
AN INCH BELOW NORMAL.

NOVEMBER...RATHER TYIPCAL NOVEMBER, WITH NEAR NORMAL TEMPERATURES
AND RAINFALL. WARMER AND WET START TO THE MONTH AS A STRONG PACIFIC
JET KEPT ACTIVE WEATHER AROUND THROUGH THE 7TH. RATHER POTENT FRONTS
THE 4TH TO 6TH BROUGHT HEAVY RAIN. HIGH PRESSURE WAS STRONG ENOUGH
FOR A TIME TO BRING DRY WEATHER TO THE REGION FROM 23RD TO 29TH,
MAKING FOR A RATHER PLEASANT THANKSGIVING BREAK. CHILLY MORNINGS
ALSO, WITH BELOW FREEZING LOWS 24TH THROUGH 29TH. TOTAL RAINFALL OF
5.27 INCHES REMAINED SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL.

DECEMBER...RAIN RETURNED WITH A VENGEANCE TO START THE MONTH. A
SERIES OF ATMOSPHERIC RIVERS BROUGHT HEAVY RAIN DURING THE FIRST
WEEK OF DECEMBER, WITH OVER 7 INCHES OF RAIN ACROSS THE METRO. WHILE
LOCAL RIVERS DID NOT FLOOD, THERE WERE MANY REPORTS OF FLOODED
INTERSECTIONS AND OTHER LOW-LYING AREAS. RECORD WARM HIGHS ON THE
4TH AND 5TH (67 DEGREES ON THE 4TH WARMEST DECEMBER DAY ON RECORD).
REST OF THE MONTH WAS RATHER QUIET WEATHERWISE, WITH NEAR SEASONAL
TEMPERATURES, ALONG WITH SOME FOGGY MORNINGS. MILD TEMPERATURES
RESULTED IN MAKING DECEMBER 2023 THE 2ND WARMEST ON RECORD.
