DROUGHT INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CLEVELAND OH
1023 AM EDT FRI AUG 19 2016

...DROUGHT CONDITIONS SHOW SIGNS OF IMPROVEMENT...

OVERVIEW...
RAINFALL OVER THE LAST WEEK AND A HALF HAVE LED TO NOTABLE
IMPROVEMENTS OF THE DROUGHT CONDITIONS ACROSS OHIO. A WET PATTERN
EVOLVED OVER THE OHIO VALLEY BETWEEN AUGUST 9TH AND 16TH DUE TO AN
INLFUX OF MOISTURE FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO. SCATTERED SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCED LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL MOST DAYS DURING
THAT TIME. SOME STORMS PRODUCED RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES
IN A SINGLE EVENT. A SLOW MOVING COLD FRONT MOVED OVER THE REGION
ON THE 12TH AND 13TH BRINGING WIDESPREAD 0.5 TO 2 INCHES OF RAIN.
IN ALL MOST OF THE DROUGHT STRICKEN REGION RECEIVED 1.5 TO 3
INCHES OF RAINFALL.

THE RAIN HAS RECHARGED TOPSOILS RESULTING IN IMPROVEMENT TO THE
STRESSED VEGETATION AND CROPS. FOR THIS REASON THE SEVERE DROUGHT
STATUS HAS BEEN UPGRADED TO A MODERATE DROUGHT ACROSS PORTIONS OF
NORTHERN AND CENTRAL OHIO. OTHER AREAS IN THE REGION REMAIN
ABNORMALLY DRY BUT ARE NO LONGER CONSIDERED IN DROUGHT.

DESPITE THE IMPROVEMENT TO DROUGHT CONDITIONS, THERE REMAINS A
NOTABLE DEFICIT IN GROUND WATER LEVELS AND 1 METER SOIL MOISTURES.
IF THE WEATHER PATTERN ONCE AGAIN FAVORS DRIER THAN NORMAL
CONDITIONS THAN IT IS POSSIBLE THE AREA COULD QUICKLY SLIDE BACK
INTO A SEVERE DROUGHT. AT THIS TIME THE OUTLOOKS FAVOR NEAR NORMAL
RAINFALL AND SEASONABLE TEMPERATURES GOING INTO SEPTEMBER.

NEXT ISSUANCE DATE...THIS PRODUCT WILL BE NOT BE REISSUED UNLESS
A SEVERE DROUGHT REDEVELOPS IN THE REGION.
