FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR CENTRAL/NORTHERN VERMONT AND
NORTHERN NEW YORK
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
1001 AM EDT THU APR 24 2014

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM EDT THIS EVENING FOR PARTS OF
CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN VERMONT AND EASTERN ESSEX COUNTY NEW YORK...

.DISCUSSION...
DRYING NORTHWEST FLOW WILL RESULT IN AFTERNOON RELATIVE
HUMIDITIES TO GENERALLY FALL BETWEEN 15 AND 30 PERCENT TODAY.
GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS AT 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 35 TO 40 MPH WILL
BE POSSIBLE...ESPECIALLY ON THE EASTERN SLOPES OF THE CENTRAL
AND SOUTHERN GREEN MOUNTAINS. THESE DRY CONDITIONS AND GUSTY WINDS WILL
BE COMBINED WITH DRY FINE FUELS BELOW 1500 FEET ELEVATION...INCREASING FIRE
CONCERNS THIS AFTERNOON. AREAS WITH GREATEST CONCERN ARE THE
SOUTHERN CHAMPLAIN VALLEY...RUTLAND AND WINDSOR COUNTIES...AS THESE AREAS
HAVE RECEIVED LESS THAN A QUARTER INCH OF RAINFALL IN THE PAST
FIVE DAYS. AREAS ABOVE 1500 FEET CONTINUE TO HAVE MORE MOIST
CONDITIONS AS SNOWPACK HAS KEPT FUELS WET. WINDS WILL SUBSIDE
OVERNIGHT AS RELATIVE HUMIDITIES RECOVER TO 80 TO 90
PERCENT...ENDING FIRE WEATHER CONCERNS. FRIDAY WILL AGAIN BE
DRY...BUT EXPECT LIGHT WINDS.
