... THIS IS FLOOD AWARENESS WEEK IN ALASKA...

THIS WEEK MARKS THE BEGINNING OF THE FLOOD SEASON FOR ALASKA.

TODAY WE HIGHLIGHT HAZARDS OF RAINFALL FLOODING..

FLOODS KILL MORE PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES THAN ANY OTHER SEVERE
WEATHER PHENOMENON. FLOODS CAN ROLL BOULDERS THE SIZE OF CARS,
UPROOT TREES, DESTROY BRIDGES AND BUILDINGS, AND THREATEN HUMAN
LIVES. MANY OF THE MOST DAMAGING FLOODS IN ALASKA HAVE RESULTED FROM
HEAVY RAINFALL EVENTS.

LARGE VOLUMES OF RAIN CAN CAUSE RAPID WATER LEVEL RISE IN RIVERS,
LAKES AND STREAMS AND IN LOW-LYING AREAS. HEAVY RAIN FALLING ON STEEP
SLOPES CAN WEAKEN SOIL AND CAUSE MUD SLIDES, DAMAGING BUILDINGS,
PROPERTY, AND INFRASTRUCTURE. CANYONS AND VALLEYS CAN FILL QUICKLY.
VEGETATION LOSS IN RECENT BURN AREAS LEAVES THEM PRONE TO FLASH
FLOODING.

ALMOST HALF OF ALL FLASH FLOOD FATALITIES OCCUR IN VEHICLES AS ONLY
TWO FEET OF WATER ON A BRIDGE OR ROAD CAN FLOAT MOST CARS AND TRUCKS.
RAPIDLY MOVING WATER CAN SWEEP A VEHICLE OFF A ROAD OR BRIDGE AND
INTO A RIVER. WATER CAN ERODE ROAD BEDS.

IF YOU LIVE IN A FLOOD PRONE AREA, DEVELOP A PERSONAL SAFETY PLAN AND
INQUIRE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY SAFETY PLAN. DO NOT DRIVE ON FLOODED
ROADWAYS.. TURN AROUND, DO NOT DROWN.
