...CORRECTED TUE TO WED IN DATE LINE ABOVE...

ICE COVER CONDITIONS AS OF 02/21/18
*******************************************************************
MISSISSIPPI RIVER
ICE OBSERVATIONS WERE NOT AVAILABLE. VIIRS SATELLITE IMAGERY FROM
THE PAST SEVERAL DAYS WAS OBSCURED BY CLOUDS.

THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS, ST PAUL DISTRICT, PLANS TO START
ICE MEASUREMENTS ON LAKE PEPIN TODAY.

THE CORPS TAKES ICE MEASUREMENTS ON LAKE PEPIN ANNUALLY TO HELP
FORECAST THE NAVIGATIONAL OUTLOOK ON THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER.
LAKE PEPIN, THE WIDEST NATURALLY-OCCURRING PART OF THE MISSISSIPPI
RIVER, IS LOCATED BETWEEN RED WING, MINNESOTA, AND WABASHA,
MINNESOTA. MEASUREMENTS TAKEN HERE ARE CRITICAL AS IT IS THE LAST
SEGMENT IN THE NAVIGATION CHANNEL IN WHICH WINTER ICE WILL BREAK
UP.

ILLINOIS RIVER SYSTEM (CHICAGO/ILLINOIS R)
ICE OBSERVATIONS WERE NOT AVAILABLE. VIIRS SATELLITE WAS
OBSCURED BY CLOUDS. REPORTS ON MONDAY FROM THE TRIBUTARIES
INDICATED OPEN WATER TO 100 PERCENT ICE COVERAGE WITH A VARIETY
OF CONDITIONS. MOST LOCATIONS HAD MELTING ICE. A FEW ICE JAMS
WERE NOTED ON THE ROCK RIVER IN ILLINOIS.
