...AUGUST 2014 NARRATIVE FOR HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT...

FOLLOWING A PATTERN OF ALTERNATING ABOVE AND BELOW NORMAL MONTHLY
PRECIPITATION THAT HAD BEEN IN PLACE SINCE APRIL...AUGUST
DEFINITELY CHECKED IN ON THE VERY WET SIDE OF THINGS. TEMPERATURE-
WISE...THE MONTH AS A WHOLE AVERAGED OUT AS BEING VERY CLOSE TO THE
30-YEAR NORMAL...BUT FEATURED A LACK OF NOTABLE LATE SUMMER HEAT.

FOCUSING ON AUGUST RAINFALL IN MORE DETAIL...THE MONTHLY TOTAL OF
7.79 INCHES AT HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT WAS A VERY SIGNIFICANT
4.49 INCHES ABOVE THE 30-YEAR AUGUST NORMAL OF 3.30 INCHES. IN OTHER
WORDS...HASTINGS RECEIVED 236 PERCENT OF NORMAL AUGUST RAINFALL.
THIS WAS THE 5TH-WETTEST AUGUST ON RECORD OUT OF 120 YEARS DATING TO
1895...AND WAS THE WETTEST SINCE 9.84 INCHES IN 1990. RAIN EVENTS
DURING THE MONTH WERE FAIRLY EVENLY-SPACED...AS MEASURABLE RAIN
FELL ON 14 OF THE 31 DAYS. HOWEVER...TWO-THIRDS OF AUGUST RAIN FELL
DURING THE LATTER HALF OF THE MONTH...INCLUDING THE HIGHEST DAILY
TOTAL OF 1.89 INCHES WHICH FELL ON THE 22ND.

TEMPERATURE-WISE...THE MONTH AS A WHOLE WENT DOWN IN THE BOOKS AS
BEING VERY AVERAGE/TYPICAL...BUT A CLOSER LOOK REVEALS THAT IT
LACKED A NOTABLE HOT STRETCH THAT OFTEN OCCURS DURING AUGUST. THE
AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE (RESULTING FROM AVERAGING BOTH THE HIGHS
AND LOWS) WAS 74.1 DEGREES...MERELY 0.2 DEGREES BELOW THE 30-YEAR
NORMAL. THE MAJORITY OF THIS SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL OVERALL-AVERAGE
WAS ATTRIBUTED TO DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURES...WHICH AVERAGED 0.7
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. ONLY SIX DAYS REACHED OR EXCEEDED 90
DEGREES...BELOW THE 30-YEAR AUGUST AVERAGE OF NINE DAYS. OF THE 31
DAYS DURING THE MONTH...14 WERE ABOVE NORMAL...11 WERE BELOW NORMAL
AND SIX DAYS EQUALED THEIR DAILY NORMAL. BREAKING DOWN THE MONTH
INTO WEEK-LONG CHUNKS...THE OVERALL-WARMEST WEEK WAS CENTERED FROM
THE 17TH-23RD...DURING WHICH DAILY HIGHS REACHED AT LEAST 85 DEGREES
EACH DAY AND LOWS ONLY DROPPED BELOW 64 ONCE. THE MILDEST LOW
TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 70 DEGREES ON BOTH THE 6TH AND 20TH.
THE OVERALL-COOLEST WEEK WAS CENTERED FROM THE 24TH-30TH...DURING
WHICH FIVE OF SEVEN DAYS CLIMBED NO HIGHER THAN 80 DEGREES. THE
COOLEST LOW TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 55 DEGREES ON THE 12TH AND
THE COOLEST HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 74 DEGREES ON THE 25TH. THE MOST
EXTREME DAY-TO-DAY CHANGE IN HIGH TEMPERATURES DURING THE MONTH WAS
ONLY NINE DEGREES AND OCCURRED TWICE...FIRST CONSISTING OF A COOL-
DOWN FROM 92 DEGREES ON THE 5TH TO 83 DEGREES ON THE 6TH...AND THEN
AGAIN WITH A COOL-DOWN FROM 83 DEGREES ON THE 24TH TO 74 DEGREES ON
THE 25TH.

AS FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY...MOST NOTABLY HASTINGS AIRPORT
MEASURED TWO PEAK WIND GUSTS WELL IN EXCESS OF SEVERE-CRITERIA
DURING THE MONTH. THE HIGHEST OF THESE WAS AN 83 MPH BLAST THAT
ACCOMPANIED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM ON THE EVENING OF THE 17TH.
SEVERAL DAYS EARLIER ON THE 9TH...ANOTHER EVENING THUNDERSTORM
RESULTED IN A PEAK GUST OF 71 MPH. NWS HASTINGS RECEIVED NO REPORTS
OF SEVERE-CRITERIA HAIL FROM WITHIN THE CITY DURING THE MONTH
ALTHOUGH STONES UP TO NICKEL SIZE WERE REPORTED ON THE EXTREME EAST
SIDE OF TOWN ON THE EVENING OF THE 25TH.

...METEOROLOGICAL-SUMMER 2014 SEASONAL RECAP COVERING JUNE-AUGUST...

- AVERAGE MEAN TEMPERATURE: 73.3 DEGREES (1.1 BELOW NORMAL)
- SEASONAL PRECIPITATION: 17.96 INCHES (7.12 ABOVE NORMAL)

FOR THE METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER SEASON OF JUNE...JULY AND AUGUST AS A
WHOLE...HASTINGS AIRPORT RAINFALL TOTALED AN IMPRESSIVE 17.96
INCHES...WHICH WAS 166 PERCENT OF THE 30-YEAR SUMMER NORMAL OF 10.84
INCHES. THIS RESULTED IN THE 7TH-WETTEST SUMMER ON RECORD OUT OF 120
YEARS AND WAS THE WETTEST SINCE 22.84 INCHES IN 1993. THE WETTEST
CALENDAR DAY DURING SUMMER 2014 WAS JUNE 21ST WITH 2.20 INCHES AND
THE HIGHEST TWO-DAY TOTAL WAS 3.31 INCHES FROM JUNE 20TH-21ST.

TURNING TO TEMPERATURES DURING METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER...THE AVERAGE
DAILY TEMPERATURE WAS 73.3 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 1.1 DEGREES BELOW THE
30-YEAR SEASONAL NORMAL OF 74.4 DEGREES. OF THE THREE SUMMER
MONTHS...JUNE WAS THE WARMEST VERSUS NORMAL AT 0.4 DEGREES ABOVE
AND JULY WAS THE COOLEST VERSUS NORMAL AT 3.5 DEGREES BELOW. THE
HOTTEST HIGH TEMPERATURE OF SUMMER 2014 WAS 100 DEGREES ON JULY
21ST...AND THE COOLEST HIGH WAS 66 DEGREES ON JUNE 7TH. THE COOLEST
LOW TEMPERATURE OF THE SEASON WAS 50 DEGREES ON JULY 15TH AND THE
MILDEST LOW WAS 75 DEGREES ON JULY 21ST. IN TERMS OF AVERAGE DAILY
TEMPERATURE...THE OVERALL WARMEST WEEK OF SUMMER 2014 WAS JULY 20TH-
26TH AT 80.7 DEGREES...AND THE OVERALL COOLEST WEEK WAS JUNE 7TH-
13TH WITH 65.0 DEGREES.

POSSIBLY THE MOST NOTEWORTHY ASPECT OF TEMPERATURES DURING SUMMER
2014 WAS A LACK OF PRONOUNCED HEAT. AS EVIDENCE OF THIS...ONLY 18
DAYS BETWEEN JUNE 1-AUG 31 REACHED OR EXCEEDED 90 DEGREES...WELL
BELOW THE 30-YEAR AVERAGE OF 30 DAYS. THIS RESULTED IN THE 9TH-
FEWEST NUMBER OF 90+ DEGREES DAYS ON RECORD OUT OF 120 SUMMERS...AND
THE FEWEST SINCE 2009 ONLY HAD 17 DAYS. IN ADDITION...ONLY ONE DAY
THIS SUMMER REACHED 100 DEGREES...ALTHOUGH THE RECENT SUMMERS OF
2013 AND 2009 NEVER REACHED 100 DEGREES.

IN TERMS OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY...SUMMER 2014 WILL BE MOST
REMEMBERED IN HASTINGS FOR A NUMBER OF SEVERE-CRITERIA WIND GUSTS
AND ASSOCIATED DAMAGE. IN FACT...THE MONTHS OF JUNE AND AUGUST
COMBINED TO FEATURE 5 DAYS WITH THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS RANGING FROM
67 TO 83 MPH.
